The Eastern European scum you really need to watch out for is Vlad III, arriving from Wallachia on Monday night, apparently, on the broomstick express.

So I guess all Eastern Europeans exist only to come to the UK and NZ to molest our ATMs?

When they were arrested earlier in the year I was told something along the lines on it now being about a dozen Romanian gangs/groups that have been caught in NZ skimming over the last few years. It's something they're prolific at worldwide.

Quite so. They have had a reputation for it - and other even less savoury organised crime - in most of Europe for a long time.

For example I know my wife's PIN, she knows mine, that's a breach of T&C, if they'd had evidence of that, we could be in trouble.

Well, you have just told everyone that now ;)

Yet curiously (IMO) crime rates in Romania don't seem worse than some countries in W Europe, lower murder rate than Belgium for example.

I'm heading away soon to a family function, most of the guests are from Mezzogiorno.  Should I wear kevlar?

Well done to our NZ Police - arresting these scumbags - something that police from other jurisdictions were not able to do.

These people obviously thought that NZ would be a soft touch, and be able to get away scott-free.

Have these foreigners not remembered the fate of the Rainbow warrior saboteurs ? France had thought we'd be a soft touch, and our police force under-whelming.

Well, I have news for you, Mr Foreign scumbag crim, our police may seem slow and effectiveness to us local people, but woe-betide you if you come into NZ and perpetrate any crime - you have the NZ Police force AND the NZ populace to deal with.

We protect our own....

Hell yeah - a couple of years laying on the beach on a tropical atoll - living in constant fear of instant death from a falling coconut.

<shudder>

I thought all the ASB ATMs had those little shield things over the keypad, presumably to stop filming of you entering your pin, and the jitter things to stop cards being read at they're inserted/removed from the slots. Do these not work or do they simply remove them (in which case they're not of much use!)

You are correct there but Romania - the nation - and Romanians - the people - have come to understand a very important thing about their place in the world.

They are surrounded by much richer countries and there are also many many much richer countries all over the world.

Rich pickings and ripe for the taking.

The police in Romania have little money and few resources and what they have, they use on local affairs. Steal a car, rob a bank or kill somebody in Romania and it is likely that the crime will be investigated and the perps will be brought to justice.

Run some internet scam or plant ransomware on computers in rich countries and the prospect that your national law enforcement authorities will take action, or will co-operate with foreign authorities is pretty much zero.

The same goes for crimes such as organised card skimming overseas. We caught these guys - so what - we will not give them a punishment that will deter and if they would have made it home, they will have got away with it sure that they will not be prosecuted in their home country.

Indeed, the guys caught here will not be sorry. Unless NZ was their first port of call (unlikely) they will have racked up large sums on their travels and that money will already be back home and waiting for them when they are released from jail here. They probably have enough money waiting back home to buy a house and open a business.
