If it's genuine quality and the subscription fee is reasonable then I would happily pay for it. I would hope that they will have some video content, because there is nothing worth watching on TV any more apart from The Nation and the bits of Checkpoint that have video.

Mediaworks is a shambles now, but it wasn't that long ago when they were producing some very good content, and Mark Jennings was right at the forefront of it.

They will have to be smart to succeed with big plans, but they already have enough for a comfortable niche.

Editors do seem to have a lot of power over what is printed and what isn't these days. As we have less papers, and local papers have merged, you do get less diversification. There is so much stuff going on in NZ that never makes it into the media, as it is not what gets the 'click'. It is all about the click these days.

It's an interesting idea, and I wish them luck.

But the news would have to be genuine and of a very high quality to make me pay a significant subscription. Otherwise, I would rather continue to subscribe to the Economist instead - which does provide genuine high quality international coverage and analysis, and produces quite a bit of material.

It really is. How can you claim that we have excellent TV journalists who are never allowed to practice? If they are never allowed to practice, how can you ever have obtained evidence to support their excellence?

TV doesn't have journalists really - one or two reporting from war zones but they are really largely just presenters reading stuff written by others who like to puff up their own behinds by claiming to be serious journalists.

We have the same percentage of good journalists as any other developed nation.

Pay for news? Never happen. The mindset in NZ, maybe todays generation is I want it for free, especially boring news. Wow, who would pay for that??? Well, some here would, maybe me too, but line up 1000 people in the street and most will say "say what???"

We buy games for $100, no prob. Buy a phone or tablet app fro $2-99, never!!! Thats whats its like. The issue I see is those who are happy to pay, like some here, are a minority. I dont see the math working.

I have seen Duncan Garner do good work when he wasn't chained to that awful Story. I liked him on The Vote. I also like Rachael Smalley on The Nation. Paddy Gower is a good political correspondent. Hillary Barry doesn't bore or enrage me. There are others.

New Zealand does not lack capable journalists but the commercialised dumbing down of broadcast media here offers fewer and fewer opportunities for them to do the serious work they are capable of. I have a particular loathing of Story, thankfully soon to be gone from our screens, and the cringeworthy inanities the hosts are required to exchange like some brain-dead Ken and Barbie dolls. That must be a pretty humiliating experience for anyone who ever started out with any aspirations to be a a credible news person. I feel sorry for them.

Hillary Barry, and Rachel Smalley, well that killed any credible chance. They fit in the same mould as John "make an mountain out of a molehill every single story as if it's a matter of life and death and drama galore, with my well over exaggerated dramatic intones" Campbell.

If you consider those are amongst the best we have, we are DOOMED.

That possibly comes down to competition. Games, there is no competition, if you want the game, you have to pay for it. Apps, it is a race to the bottom, essentially they give it away as a freemium app, and if people want additional features or to stop the annoying ads, they can pay for it. That is possibly the way media will go. There are news websites in NZ that do have paywalls, but they tend to be niche websites with niche stories. But mainstream news, they are filled with the same old stories that international news websites have, which have headlines tuned to get clicks. Noone wants to pay for that, because it is largely rubbish and clickbait stuff. But it will get them a lot of visitors and clicks, which is what they can then sell to their advertisers. Probably not quality viewers though.

When news happens, say Trump says something worth knowing about, EQ happened, local flooding, its everywhere. Stuff, Herald, TV, etc. Its the same news, and its worth reading it. We don't need to watch, Story or Seven Up or whatever its called, we don't need to read the Kardashian one-liner click bait. The facts are there. Watch the first 20 mins of TV1,2,3 news. Its factual news. No entertainment or clickbait.

If there was some international news, say the recent air crash, the facts are there without clickbait or bias.

What is the real issue in this thread?
