Note that these price increases are for FASTPOST, not standard post.  

Standard post prices are currently (dictated by the price of a kiwistamp being $1), $1 for DLE letter, $2 for medium and $3 for large. 

There are some other increases, but standard mail is remaining as is.

Cant wait for it to end up at $4 to send a letter or something. Might stop all the crap that so many businesses insist on sending that I then have to deal with and keep somewhere around to remind me to deal with it at some stage.

Emails are _so_ much easier to deal with, and the idea of putting written text on a piece of dead tree and have someone carry it across the city to leave it in a tin box on the side of the road is absurd, and needs to die. If its important and timely, post not suitable. If its valuable, post not suitable. Confidentail, again, post is useless since it can be taken and opened by anyone.

I have a whole heap of kiwistamps that I got when they were 40 cents each, which will allow you to send a letter within NZ. They are now worth $1, so the value of them has more than doubled. So if they did go up to $4 a letter, that would be a pretty good rate of return.

well considering how expensive the retail purchases are over the business accounts, I expect they have some room to keep them constant for a little while.

It's the ever descending spiral.

Sending goods overseas  - like birthday and Xmas pressies, can often be equal to the price of the gift. We are not into sending expensive gifts, but more like home made crafts and "things from the heart" stuff.

Last time it was near on $50.00 for a small package of non-dangerous, non-fragile items, that fitted into a box not much bigger than an A5 paper ream. ( Not A4 - this was A5 sized).

And when there are more than a couple of overseas destinations, it gets ridiculously expensive.

This year, it will be e-gifts.

For overseas family these days I tend to shop online at a vendor with a local presence at the destination, usually Amazon. They'll gift-wrap and deliver directly to the recipient, often enough with free shipping. Why buy local to send overseas when you can buy local to the person you're sending to.

JayADee: My mum still sends me letters on paper written long hand. I email replies to my sister who passes them on. I sometimes feel guilty about this.

My mother also. However, she and I have been communicating in that way since I went away to boarding school when I was 7 1/2 so it seems normal. To be fair, she emails as well.

I am rural and I simply refuse to pay the inflated delivery charges on Trade Me. I know traders use this as a way around Trade Me fees but I just have a psychological block against paying as much or more for delivery as the item itself. That is a main reason, though not the only one, that I now do most of my shopping on Aliexpress. 

I'm sure that putting up the prices of a service that is becoming more redundant by the day will be their saviour putting them back in the black in no time.

It's complicated, but at the end of the day it boils down to exports from China being subsidised, both directly in the form of the Chinese government providing subsidy, and indirectly through the way in which international mail works via the UPU, there is also a lot of competition in the China for sending mail overseas, both from Chinese and foreign mail carriers doing direct entry type arrangements.

The problem is that overseas it appears their postal systems are subsidized. As a result NZ companies con't compete, and if we try to export, the cost to send overseas is just far to expensive for most items. SO if you are producing and selling lower cost items, you don't have a chance, unless you export in bulk, and then sell via an overseas distributor or retailer.  Our government really needs to help small NZ companies out with finding a cheap way of exporting goods.
