Don't forget that this is a BBC production. Whatever they do, it is seen by many to be either down right wrong or too PC. I will keep an open mind and judge it once I have seen it.

I also think Chris Chibnall is a good choice for show-runner. Torchwood was excellent, and finished far too soon in my opinion. And his familiarity with Jodie Whittaker from three seasons of Broadchurch can only be a good thing.

It certainly smacks of PC to me.

It diminishes the integrity of the dr who universe. Dr who was just a fun geeky apolitical TV series... Now they have gone all deep and philosophical and complicated. Although to be fair they have been going in this direction for a few years now.

Now there a all these questions out there... Is dr who gay/ bi or straight? Dr who was a geeky white male with fun gadgets. No longer.

Is it all about the modern hatred of white males? Certainly seems to be a theme lately.

Wouldn't be surprised if woody Allen were the next director.

Does anyone care about tradition these days?

Maybe it will be ok though, even if I don't agree with the underlying pc'ness.

Must confess, I was hoping Colin Frizzell would be next.

I am lost here, how is it that this selection for a character "diminishes the integrity of the Dr Who universe" ?

Is there some PC involved in this casting choice? Of course.

But that doesn't mean it's a bad choice to make. We've had 12 incarnations of the Doctor so far, and they have all been white guys. The problem with that is not that it is politically incorrect, it's that you are limited in just how many directions you can take the character with each regeneration.

Throughout history white men have pretty much always been top dog, only recently has this changed (and many would argue there is still a way to go). Putting a female Doctor into historical earth-based situations where she will try to take charge and be taken seriously will present a whole lot of new problems for her that she won't have faced before. The same would be true of a black Doctor. It will, however, be a difficult balancing act in the writers room. They don't want to overdo it, but it would be a wasted opportunity if they ignore it completely.

@networkn:

I am not surprised, but it smacks of PC to me. Like they need to "share" it around. I am half expecting the next Doctor to be black, or transgender or something.

And that would be bad how?

Capt Jack Harkness was very popular, and he was gender/species inclusive!
