By my reckoning the first warnings were around 1 September. That is 9 days ago. You could have walked 90 miles in that time...! I'd rather walk and be further away than sit in the car going nowhere and get flattened when it arrives, personally.

Also, 9 days ago I bet you could have got a flight almost anywhere outside Florida. Now not so much.

As I said, personally I would have left immediately.

Friends of mine moved out of their house a couple of days ago to stay with friends. Turns out the friends' house is no longer in the "safe enough" zone, so they've all had to move out again. Last heard from, they're in the great parking lot.

Latest projections for hurricane Jose (currently a cat 4) on the Earth.Nullschool site indicate that instead of heading NE and dispersing over the sea, it looks like hooking back SW, intensifying, then heading WNW straight toward Florida.

In that model it's also looking big, with >200km/h wind speed. Those projections are a week out, so not particularly reliable.

Regrettably this will become the norm. Global warming is more heat and more moisture in the atmosphere. While the land does warm up, the oceans absorbs more and retains it more, which gives a greater temp differentiation. Ideal for hurricanes. I know a couple in Miami, they left

I was in a hurricane in Townsville many years ago. Palm trees horizontal, but Irma is another level or three

Just shows the knock on effects that humans have caused, due to the way we have treated the earth. The way NZ is polluting itself, is no better than the rest of the world. Short term gain, but we will pay in the future.

Of those poor people that other speak about, how many can afford two weeks of lost wages because they are not at home?

More importantly, at that point in time, they didn't even know if it was going to make landfall in Florida.

If they hadn't left, the business would be closed anyway, so likely they wouldn't be getting paid anyway.

Looks like CNN have put a live feed on YT. Normally they take the non official feeds down ASAP but looks like due to interest they have put their own one up.

I am watching a CNN US feed and the live feed from Naples is amazing. They are now right in the eye of the storm and the wind literally stopped within 5 minutes from gusts of 140 mph to nothing! They are now waiting for the back of the storm where the winds will change direction and blow the sea waters in. They are saying that they believe that this is the first time they have ever been able to record and show live the tail of such a storm. Nonetheless, incredible reality TV.
