I would say suggesting something cruel and illegal on a public forum isn't a very good idea. They are a protected species and suggesting a dog maul them to death is cruel and sick.

Just to be specific - I don't believe anything cruel and/or illegal was mentioned, neither was any mauling or death?

My aunt used to get me to cull some of the tribe that lived in the adjoining paddock to her which I did twice a year but they always seemed to number about 15 or so regardless.

Using a rifle in a built up area is a no no and dangerous.

One would hope that is what was implied. Either way they are a protected species most of the year and can only be shot during duck hunting season and only with a shotgun.

Breaking these laws will most likely end up in a court date whether they are a nuisance or not. I suggest the OP contacts DOC and seeks their help in moving them to a better place.

A high powered gas piston air rifle .22 should work these have been known to take out small pigs

I would suggest however calling DOC if they are no help trap them and move them elsewhere if that wont work I would guess shooting them is the only option.

On the farm I grew up on we had a Puke problem, it was all solved when we had enough caught 2 of them and humanely dispatched them and hung them from the fence around where they hung out. This was on the basis we heard they do not go anywhere near other dead Pukes. It worked flawlessly.

In other words, if you saw your mates head on a spike you'd also think twice about entering.

I'm not aware of any non-lethal measure that will encourage Pukeko to move on. They are gutsy little critters and will happily take on sheep that gets too close to their nest. A dog will sort them out, but that's hardly humane and as soon as the dog is gone they will be back. It's also a big ask for the dog to draw a line between the pukekos and the chooks.

I suspect DoC will tell you that they are a native species and you just have to put up with them.

I would have a chat to your local Fish & Game office. They may be more help.

I think it was way back in the Rothmans NZ Rally they interviewed an overseas driver and asked him how the rally was going and he said something like " great, except for those goddam purple chickens I keep hitting with the car"

It's actually believed the breed seen here came to NZ from Australia a millennium ago. So if the Purple Swamp Hen (as the Aussies call them) came from Australia, how are they native to NZ?
