They're not aggressive, and pollinate plenty of garden plants.  If you want to reduce the chance of being stung, avoid wearing blue - especially loose fitting blue clothes. 

 

 

I remember being in the south island a few years back and having around 50 bumblebees around us in our camp site. They didn't attack or sting us just chilled landed on us once or twice.

The place I had in Blenheim has a 1 acre section and grew lots of blue borage flowers in summer, which bumble bees love. My dog was fascinated by bumble bees and would watch them for ages and try to catch them with his paws and mouth.  I never saw him get stung.

 

Even mowing the lawns they would just move away without any aggression.
