Depends on the colour of the skin of the person doing the restraining.
PhantomNVD: And what if a member of the public restrained them... are we also liable for an assault charge when defending private property in a reasonable way (if physically restraining someone) without actual damage/aggression?
Well if kids are not allowed to be separated by a teacher from fighting each other, I'd say yeah you'll go to jail for a long time for holding back a few taggers.

To save money, things like guards at stations etc are all cut right back.
You're on your own.
Ok it's american, but it's an interesting watch...
quickymart:
Could they have not have done a citizen's arrest or something, and held them until the Police turned up?
There are rules around what's allowed when making a citizen's arrest, see here.
If it was me watching this going on then I'd be worried that if I approached the taggers that they'd spray me in the face with their paint; so I don't blame anyone for not jumping in and tackling them.
And even if they were caught they'd probably get nothing more than a warning from the courts and then let off.

Although be aware that recent law changes have made Citizen's "arrest" powers more restrictive

It can only be a matter of time before some gung ho person seizes the keys of a 'tourist' only to find that the said 'tourist' is (a) not a tourist and/or (b) is highly trained in self defence and objects strenuously to what they regard as assault..!

We should be allowed to just shoot people.

Well, I bet not too many people would pull over a car and try and steal the keys in Texas..! ![]()

This is a really unpleasant thread. I understand the frustration underlying some of the comments but talking about shooting people is just dumb and nasty. You don't solve social problems with a gun. Just look at the USA. Hundreds dead in schools and at concerts. Yeah, they really have the answer there.
In America the taggers wouldn't bother spray-painting you in the face. They would just shoot first and they wouldn't be using paint guns. If they want your keys, they will also shoot first, like they do in South Africa. Calls for violence don't fix anything. The problems that lead to such behaviour are deep-rooted and require long-term solutions, not bang bang quick fixes. Grow up, guys.
