It's difficult to see how awards for anything artistic can satisfy everyone when the appreciation is subjective.

Natalie Portman won an Oscar for Black Swan but I guarantee that as many people disliked her performance as liked it.

These award ceremonies are only a form of advertising anyway.

The awards are like cooking competitions. They exist to generate fake excitement in order to increase audience size and revenue.

I'm inclined to agree with your first two, but not as much on your third. Awards ceremonies are an important part of the recognition of effort.

Having said that about point 2, actors can deserve an Oscar for being unlikeable in a movie, if that's what the director was going for. Takes a fair bit of effort to be a nice person and act like an ahole etc.

Think Harold from Neighbours, who is nothing like his character in real life.

Maybe 'like' and 'dislike' were the wrong words for me to use. As you say you can like a performance from someone even if you don't like the actor or character they are playing.

Possibly 'thought it was a good performance' and 'thought it was a poor performance' would have more accurately conveyed what I was thinking.

Yes, I can understand that. I haven't seen the movie myself, but from the people who I know who have, opinion seems pretty mixed. Never really been a fan of Natalie Portman as an actress.

Oscars are different. Take off your clothes and you are sure to get one.
