Dairyxox:

We were getting better at this, but kids don't help. They need a lot of stuff just for basic living, and then you want them to have things that will mentally stimulate them as well.

Have a toddler and our solution to this was to basically box up most of her toys and outgrown clothes and give them to charity. We've done this for the past two years around November because she's pretty much spoilt at Christmas.

Meanwhile I've got old gear that I can't bring myself to get rid of so I just stuff everything in boxes under the house.

Too much junk. And a lot of it IS junk. Been systemically getting rid of various things so far this year. I still got a long way to go but I'm pleased with general progress so far.

We have less and less, desktop machines have gone, replaced by our laptops. Still have desks, but smaller glass topped kidney shaped desks that don't dominate the room with 2monitors to plug into.

Our big stereo went years ago, replaced by a small system, and even that might be replaced by our phones and the UE Boom which is used just as much.  Spotify to UEBoom makes just as nice music, and you can have it in the garden.

DVD player gone, VHS player gone, Sky box recorder going eventually, all replaced by a Roku that connects to Netflix and Google chromecast from the laptops.

No media center needed either. No extra physical storage, although multi gig backup drives are rarely used still. No more USB's, all cloud.

I want the bloody annoying landline to go, but wife likes it for international calls.

I would throw out the printer as well, but wife still uses it. I can't think of the last time I had to print anything

Still have an old 80's boombox double tape deck that I am attached to, but never use, and my wife wants to throw out, as well as a transister radio.

I have far too much stuff. Mostly thousands of books, which are my downfall, and which I struggle to part with.

I either need to get rid of some books, or get a bigger house. So we are currently looking for a bigger house......

Yep, I’m in the same crowd... 3 bookshelves of books and I read only on kindle and Libby now 🤷‍♂️

Then there’s a garage of camping gear and kids bikes/scooters and the 2 big freezers needed when ‘homekill’ happens... one container of fencing gear, woodwork tools and a ride-on mower (lifestyle block), and another container for SWMBO’s “stuff”

Not to mention the pile of gaming gear and desktops in the lounge corner that haven’t even been plugged in in over a year now!

Won't your foils and epees go rusty being stored like that?

LOL my eldest does fencing, the sword kind, foil specifically, rather than the kind that keeps the livestock in the paddock. Every time someone asks what sports he's in I have to explain he's not into competitive fence building!

We restrict our hoarding to our studies (wife and I lucky enough to have one each) while the rest of the house is minimalistic. People who visit ask us if we have just moved in but we have been here 16 years.

I find it hard to throw out old computer manuals. After all, you never know when you might need to look something up about the PDP-11 or DEC Vax.

We re-carpet'd recently. The house is now nice and clutter free, but don't look in the garage because that's were all the junk went. I really need to get ruthless in there.

You can turn some old smart phones into cash, especially if the screens are intact. Genuine replacement screens for phones tend to be expensive and the Chinese knock-off LCD's have poor viewing angles/colour/contrast etc.

I'm a .....

..

.

hoarder ..

There, I said it.

between my wife , and I we have about 30 60L stacking organisers, and a dozen or so smaller stackers around the place.

Hobbies, crafts, xmas decs, kids stuff and mementos, camping and fishing gear, ornaments and keepsakes,  AV cables, wall warts, etc.

Not to mention garage shelving which has tools, paints, gardening stuff, a stack of chinese food containers which have all sorts of hardware - all the way from nuts and bolts to corks and net curtain hooks.

Most of it labelled !!!

I'm sorry but that all sounds rather too tidy and organised. You're not a *real* hoarder until it's all in piles on the floor, completely filling all rooms in the house!

By the way, there are some Geekzen in Wellington that would like you to join their "loose nuts" club....
