surfisup1000: Council's are encouraging high density housing but failing to adequately enforce environmental lifestyle laws.

I know that in the UK they have moved away from High density wherever possible. I think that here in NZ the same is true.

Councils are ...... but failing to adequately enforce environmental lifestyle laws? I may misunderstand what you are saying, but council and lifestyle are two separate issues. I personally find your suggestion a bit Orwellian and would prefer to see that individual lifestyle choice and performance continues to equal the end housing result. I do however support moderate protection for low performers, but we cannot hold peoples hands forever.

If we enforce everything, the common denominator will be the support of the laziest and lowest performing end result.

I just found out my bad neighbours moved out without notice: just packed up and left leaving 3 months rent in arrears.

So much for friends of the owner.

We have 3 direct neighbors (all own the homes, no renters), 2 of them we get on fine with, the 3rd (and closest) was a South African couple (retired) and the wife caused nothing but trouble for us (her husband was fine, he unfortunately passed away just before Xmas) for the first 18 months or so (with the help of one of the other neighbors who has it in for us as well just because we have kids who play in the backyard) - we've had CYFS called on us, dog control, un-scheduled visit from council because our pool gate wasn’t closed, Watercare site visit for a new pipe that went in and so on.........

CYFS - The claim was that we locked the kids outside on a regular basis at 1am. We were given two dates it supposedly occurred - one, we weren’t even home, 2nd time we had a party until about 11pm, and had friends stay who could go witness. No further issues.

Dog control - got a young dog, who as dogs do, barked a lot - finally calmed down but would bark at anyone approaching the property - dog control called out multiple times for the barking. Local dog control office had no issues with it and hinted as to who it was that complained. "They were shift workers and sleep during the day". Bollocks. The guy was on ACC for back problems (yet was outside chopping wood every day) and didn’t work. Officer marked it down as "conflict of lifestyles". One of the days of complaint, the dog was away at friends while we were on holiday. No further issues.

Council - Knock at the door, council staff member there regarding our pool and the gate. Report that the gate was not correctly secured. I admitted this, yes correct, but don’t see the issue – took her to the pool area and she looked at the gate, then the pool. “But the pools empty?” – Yes, so what’s the problem? (it had big hole in the liner) “No problem, just make sure the gate is fixed if/when you get the pool filled” and that was it. No further issues.

Watercare – OK, I’ll admit we were slightly guilty of the issue, but….. we were having drainage issues, so a builder friend put in a new pipe down the side of the house – unknown to us at the time, he had it running into the waste water pipe. We then get a letter from WC advising of this – I asked how they knew of this. They claimed member of the public walking along the road had seen it. Where it was situated, there was no way to see it from the road unless you were purposely looking directly at our piping/spouting, and even then you wouldn’t be able to tell where it was going. We of course got it sorted, but wasn’t hard to figure out who it was that told Watercare. No further issues.

But if each time, each of those agencies had gone back to the complainant, advising “no problems”, it would have made the neighbors look like complete idiots.

We’re hoping the annoying neighbor will sell up soon (big house for one person) one of two things happens – a young nice family move in, or we win lotto and buy it and get some friends in 😉

I've had my share of interesting neighbours. I spent Easter away and it was lovely. We were staying down a shared drive, maybe six or seven houses on it. My nephew and I would throw a baseball to each other and every time one of us would miss and trudge down the drive (maybe half a dozen times over the four days) all the dogs would get riled up.

First place had one wee dog, next place had three medium dogs, last place had one big dog. And there were others I couldn't see. The same if a car went down the driveway, or one of the other owners walked down. They'd all bark, then the one next door would run out (they were all fenced in) to see what was happening and so on.

Forget cats and their native bird murdering tendencies, get rid of dogs! For a few days it was quite amusing, but I couldn't live with that!

As you state, the agencies did not go back to the complainant and make them look like complete idiots. It just goes to prove that there are two sides and interpretations to every story. I know which side of the fence I am on

We used to have pschos living next door when we first bought our last house. By the time they were evicted it was a weekly screaming domestic. You know it's bad when you call the police and the reply was "oh yes, we know the house". A highlight was having the police turn up on Christmas day.

Ironically we went from that nonsense to Josh Kronfeld moving in. He was the nicest, least assuming person to have living next door and his kids are lovely.

We own but our neighbors rent. We share the same driveway with us at the front.

I have a 4 year old daughter and our kid used to play on the drive way almost every day with their 2 kids around the same age. Two guy fawkes ago they let of a bunch of fireworks outside my daughters bedroom window. I had a word with them asking if in future they could let off fireworks further down the driveway so that it wasn't outside my daughters bedroom. The following night exactly the same thing. I went back and asked if they could just let off fireworks a little further down the driveway as to not wake up my daughter. I asked nicely.

The next day when my daughter went out side to play with the neigbours kids they got called inside. This happened for a week.

I went next door to see what was up, was told that the kids were not allowed to play together. I had apparently insulted the grandmother, I offered to apologise, but no I had made her feel unwelcome. Next time my daughter went out to play the kids surrounded her and were chanting NO NO NO and pointing at her. I kind of lost it and banned their kids from playing on the driveway. (we own it but but they have a right of access for transport).

I would love to solve everything but they will not communicate because the grandmother (doesn't speak english) has taken offence. All my daughter wants is to play with them.

Just waiting for them to move out

It sucks when you own your house and your neighbours are jerks. If you're renting it's a bit easier to just pack up and move.

I have not changed my mind - it's still a goal!

We literally have hundreds of people living next door, and they are fantastic neighbours - every single one. They're quiet, tidy and all keep to themselves. New people move in on a regular basis, the lawns are kept tidy as well as the gardens.

We're rural, with a cemetery on one boundary :D

Have heard rumors that at 1 point, WINZ were removing tenancy tribunal orders from the public database. As a means of helping problem tenants and homeless people get houses.

And more rumors, that supposedly it can take around 3 months to get a tenancy tribunal hearing. So if you get stuck with bad tenants, it can take awhile to get rid of them. While the house is unavailable to good tenants.

Some neighbors seriously believe that the sun only rises because of them.

They even become smaller if they depend on the help of the other neighbors.
