shielded operation should save you

I'm pretty sure shielded operation does not apply if he is within an aerodrome boundary.

Make sure you don't confuse aerodrome boundary with Control Zone boundary. The Control Zone boundary is the large area of airspace that requires an ATC clearance to operate in. The aerodrome boundary is essentially the fence surrounding the immediate aerodrome area.

ATC authorisation is required for all Part 101 operations within controlled airspace unless the operation is a shielded operation.

ATC authorisation is required for remotely piloted aircraft and free flight model aircraft on or within 4 km of controlled aerodromes unless;

  • the operation is a shielded operation that is conducted outside the boundary of the aerodrome; and
  • in airspace that is physically separated from the aerodrome by a barrier that is capable of arresting the flight of the aircraft.

As mentioned, log a request through Airshare. Ops can be approved up to 400ft in controlled airspace, but within 4km, this reduces to 200ft, and even lower again if operating under the approach paths to the runways. This information is available to the ATC's, and they can contact you approving the appropriate heights.

Let us know how you get on!

I have several drones - aerial video, toy grade and racing.

And for the budget you are talking about the control, stability and video quality will be utter ar$e.

Seriously - a pole with an action cam on the end would be  much better option.

What is the minimum recommendation (ignoring budget) that you make if he still wanted to go ahead and check his gutters with a drone?

You can get wifi controlled ones on aliexpress. But for less than $700 you wont find a 'good' one. DJI have a nice little baby one called the Spark https://www.dji.com/spark?site=brandsite&from=nav

You may find the firmware will prevent it from taking off if you are too close to wellington airport.

I have a DJI Mavic Pro and use it in the shielded operation around napier (mostly controlled space)

I also have a registered flight along the beachfront / marine parade area in napier on the website where you can go and register your planned drone flight.

https://www.airshare.co.nz/my-flights/plan-a-flight

I just said my flight was a multiday duration from 25/04/2017-25/04/2018 which reminds me i need to go and register a new flight for the upcoming 12 months. Max altitude is 130m so a bit higher than the shielded operation.

Near wellington airport it might not be so easy to get approved. But still, for checking gutters.... shielded operation. I wouldnt be worried the slightest bit if you are below the apex of your roof, just checking gutters.

But its good to know about the rules, just in case you are tempted to take it up mt vic

Slightly off topic for the post; but it really bugs me when i see news about idiots flying too close to airports or near aircraft paths endangering so many lives! its these sort of people that make it difficult for recreation users like us who just want to enjoy and capture some good footage.

I really hope that there are laws passed to heavily fine people who knowingly endanger lives. But I hope laws dont make it too difficult for recreation users who safely fly drones and take the enjoyment out of it.

Back to the OP, i agree that for that price range, you probably will get something you get really frustrated with and toss away. Spend a bit more and have a look on amazon as well for drones in your price range. You may not be able to buy it from Amazon, but it will give you an idea of what to look for on Ali. I do know that the Parrot drones come on for specials (around $100-150 usd) regularly (if memory serves me correctly).

Or maybe get the DJI Spark (i have that one), with the fly more bundle, and <safely> take up droning as a recreation as well :). Dont bother getting just the Spark without the controller, its impossible to control just using the phone. Keep an eye out on second hand drones as well. There are lots of people who do like to upgrade periodically and sell their hand-me-downs.

As a couple of others have said the DJI Spark is a decent option - but your location complicates things.

Unless you wanted to get into quads as a hobby and so could justify spending more on what would otherwise be a one-off usage ie. your gutter inspection.

All that said - I would still go with a pole + action cam.

Thanks again for everyone. For guys who suggested a pole/camera, :)))) a drone will has another task too, not just checking gutters, how about getting beer on BBQ on backyard :)))))) just joking. I know wife is easy :))))))))))))) but no fun But seriously, if the cheap ones are crap and DJI is suggested one, may be I should consider a bigger one in terms of fishing! Yes I like fishing and this summer when we travelled around, I think it was one of Coromandel camp and there were teens doing cast fishing and they used a drone to lunch a line, when I saw it I though what a brilliant idea, the drone did lunch like 150-200m away from the beach, human can't do it and I saw youtube videos then. Wow!

you would need some sort of way to release the line from the drone - most dont have the capability to carry much (only a few grams of weight) but the really powerful ones could lift a can of beer.

In saying that if you are just flying out some nylon then it could possibly work with some sort of dropping mechanism to release it at the right time - would depend upon the drone and what attachment points there are.

On my mavic pro, the CPU heatsink is the bottom of the drone so wouldnt be able to attach a release hook to it.

Being a spark user, it would work, but I wouldnt be using it for commercial purposes.

  • At that level it would be slightly effected by turbulence
  • Your view would depend on tablet used
  • lighting would be an issue
  • You would need to be very close (no zoom capability)
  • Expensive to crash
  • Neighbors would accuse you of stalking and youll be plastered all over the media

Cam on a stick would be better :p

The Warehouse:

Interstellar Drone with 720p HD Camera $99.00

Andromeda Drone with Camera $49.00

I have no idea how good or bad they are but they are within your price range but for what you want to use them for you could donate them to charity after use.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Yeap, been through this myself, even though the quad was within my property and pointing towards the house taking some house photos. Neighbor was just concerned about who it was more than anything.  I think part of the problem is the word 'drone', because that is a negative word that is linked to spying, and the media has hyped it all up. The spark at least looks like a toy.

The Tallo at https://store.dji.com/product/tello looks okay and $NZ200 isn't bad, and I think it has DJI tech in it. But it is mobile phone controlled, and the video isn' the best. But maybe a good starter quad.
