I have swapped old coins for new at the Reserve Bank No. 1 The Terrace in Wellington where they had a tin at reception for changing small amounts. That was about 5 years ago. It doesn't help if you don't live in Wellington area though.

I did a little research on the possible value of my three 1935 threepences (mintage approx. 40364), as shown in the above web site. It looks like they could be worth at least $120 each?

 

So, it may not pay to dump hundreds of coins on a coin dealer without first looking carefully through them!

Unfortunately what a catalogue says they're worth and what you can get a collector to pay for them are often quite different. And of course a dealer will pay even less as he wants to make a healthy profit when he sells it on to a collector.
