Geektastic: As far as hoovers go, I am definitely a Dyson fan.

As far as Hoovers go, I'm not a fan.

Hoover is a house brand of Godfreys in AU/NZ. Godfreys have a poor reputation and I wouldn't recommend the Hoover I've used.

Just got Miele C3 Cat and Dog and its great picking up cat fur and as others have said carpets are cleaner. Would recommend.

I am not sure how well it stacks up for hard to get up pet hair etc, but the Electrolux UltraSilencer Green is the best vacuum I have ever had. In that its the most silent one. More than once have I had to check that its actually on.

I really HATE the typical vacuum sound, so having a silent one is heaven.

When I moved back to NZ 11 years ago I was talked into buying the Hoover Allergy vacuum machine with the amazing power head. After a few years, I bought the Miele cat and dog vacuum which I like way better. I wouldn’t buy another Hoover - it wasn’t a bad machine, but nowhere near as good as Miele. We have 3 cats and a dog.

My mother has one of the Sauba vacuum cleaners from Godfrey's (7+ years old) and recently added the bag saver attachment. By far the best vacuum cleaner I've ever used, and aside from a small issue with the controls on the handle, it still works very well. They do have a starting price of $1,700 however. Prior to that she had a Hoover, which only lasted a few years and made a hell of a whine. I couldn't stand to be in the same room as it. No pets, but picks up human hair well.

I think you'll find the use of the word 'hoover" as a generic name for a vacuum cleaner isn't generally used in New Zealand. In my experience those that use hoover in this way are from the UK.

We bought a number of pretty expensive vacuums over the past 15 years and been bitterly disappointed by them relative to cost. Last time around we bought a Sebo K3 after considering a variety including the Miele as well. It's been the best vacuum we have owned. Handles our pet hair, and longish pile carpet, stairs and is light weight and sucks really well.

It cost us 1/3 what we paid for our last one and does a better job.

We also bought a Dyson 6 whatever pet thing which I also really rate.

Another vote for the Miele here. We bought the C3 Cat and Dog model last year from HN, and it's been great. For me, it's the little touches like the 360 degree castors (our old vacuum cleaner had monodirectional wheels which meant it was always banging into the doorways). Or the electrostatic strip in the handle (a cheapo vacuum cleaner we were given didn't have this, and zapped us with static electricity every 30 seconds while vaccuming). Or the cord retractor which doesn't require you to hold the button down (our old cleaner wouldn't even retract fully without assistance). I realise these are now probably standard features on most cleaners, but for us they made the experience a lot more bearable. Plus, the Miele has got plenty of suction, a good head, and is reasonably compact. No regrets buying it, and would easily recommend it.

Used one in Australia earlier in the year at my brother’s house. He has two long haired cats and a golden retriever. It cleaned all that up easily while being portable and having a 40 minute battery life.

We have the V6, its great for a quick vacuum but not good enough as a replacement to a normal vacuum cleaner IMO. We just use it on our wooden floors instead of sweeping. My parents have a kirby, we grew up with the thing. It must be over 30years old now and still going strong. I dont think there is another brand that is as robust as the good old kirby.

My Tellus was. $750 I think in 1991. Only issue is the head gets clogged with hair so i dismantle and reassemble, 5 minutes but annoying. Replaced once, and will do that again when I give it away. Still have it as will give to youngest daughter when she goes flatting.

Another vote for the C3 Cat and Dog. Had ours a year now and it does a great job of cleaning up after the 2 dogs and the cat that seems to be constantly shedding
