My biggest bugbear is the drop in quality of clothing. There used to be a time when if you brought a top brand i.e Ralph Lauren. They used heavyweight fabrics and manufacturing techniques that would last decades. Now even the top brands use lightweight fabrics which get holes and tears so easily. Bring back quality - I'm happy to pay more.

 

Yep totally agree. I still have and wear two "Thomas Cook - Boot & Clothing Co" shirts which I bought in Sydney in 1985. Mind you they only get worn in winter due to their weight. They have endured the Sydney full sun drying and the winter clothes dryer for 33 years. They are just slightly faded but otherwise still in perfect condition.

This topic has made me research their on-line store - thinking seriously about buying.

I buy the vast majority of my clothing when I am in the US. Shirts I would have paid $100-150 for here are only $20 on clearance at outlet malls, so I can buy 2-3 years worth of shirts in a single go and I know they will fit and be of excellent quality. 

I bought a fair amount of stuff from the Banana Republic, but was incredibly disappointed when they discontinued their Sateen BlueNon-Ironn business shirts and inexplicably changed the cut so that most their clothing no longer fitted me. 

I am off to Melbourne next month or two and will probably get some stuff when I am there. 

I buy from Amazon a lot since it's much easier to get 34" legs.  Very rarely do retailers in NZ go over 30-32".  So i can buy jeans that make me look like Steve Urkel, or I can import.  Tends to be importing works out a bit cheaper than going to a specialist shop in NZ too (e.g. Beggs).

I see prices are about US$700 now.  Not sure if I'd be game to buy on line even if they had measurements on file, I'd normally be there for more than a few days, so you'd have one or two intermediate fittings to get them perfect.  Top fabrics, really excellent service and tailoring.  My SO worked for a French fashion house at the time - those tailors actually made up some facsimiles of (not otherwise available) women's couture designs, top fabrics and identical down to button styles etc.  Using only photographs from an exhibition as a template.  Not sure if that was "piracy" - probably was.  Lock her up.

I find Chisel shirts fit me fine (from Farmers) and Bracks trousers. Having said that, I recently lost a lot of weight (around 15 kgs) so I should probably redo my wardrobe, as budget permits.

For things like t-shirts though, I get them from Walmart when I can (Fruit of the Loom), cheaper and I find they're fairly good quality.

Not really a jeans person, I wear trackpants from Hallensteins I got years ago but they probably need replacing - I just can't seem to find some good replacements anywhere!

I really like Beggs in Auckland.  I am a big fella that likes to casual dress nicely with good quality clothes that fit well.  I used to shop internationally for clothes, usually after visiting one of their stores when I was in the US and then choosing from their online store.   The recent GST-must-be-paid laws, have increased the price and the shipping is usually dear.   I found to Beggs to sell a good selection (by NZ standards) for high-quality clothing at a reasonable price.  I visit the store in Auckland when I am in on business occasionally to have a browse and a shop and then order anything else from their website.  They usually ship for free depending on the size of the order.

@quickymart yep but Chisel doesn't doesn't last.  I started getting Bisley when they're on special, they're much better quality.

I find trousers the hardest thing to buy.  I have a 30" leg, yet nearly all trousers (especially jeans and casual) seem to be 34".  That's a contrast to the US, where most shops have all waist sizes in 30, 32 and 34 leg sizes.  SO I usually buy jeans etc when overseas, or via Amazon.

But, I'm sure NZ retailers think I'm just trying to dodge GST and when the rules change I'll buy from them instead
