Geektastic: I've seen two films in IMAX this year. Mission Impossible and Jurassic Park.

Neither impressed me in terms of the IMAX presentation any more than a good 4k movie theatre with Atmos etc.

So, what's the big deal about IMAX and have advances in more conventional theatre projection and sound reduced any advantage it would have had?

I'm not sure. I first saw some IMAX 3d films overseas in the 90's [amazing], then in NZ, theatres seemed to be replaced with "multiplexes" that just had sticky carpet and multiple screening rooms where you could hear the sound from the cinema next door.

Present day, other than a night out, technology has caught up and I can watch decent, newish releases on my own terms and have an intermission [beer run / pee break] whenever I want.

These things are optimized for the fella sitting dead centre in the middle or close to dead middle. Whether that's enough to impress may also depend on whether the source itself was optimized for it. I'd say sources that are shot from first person point of view is for Imax. The rest, not so much.

IMAX is bigger. It is a good thing with movies :D. I don't really need 3D as it is not very good at most cases, I think it is better in movies heavy with CG like Ready Player One, that was the best 3D movie in my experience.

Also IMAX being more expensive filters out the cheapskates with bags of chips from supermarket rustling with them till the middle of the movie. There is nothing worse to ruin your experience thatn people like this. So I tend to go to IMAX mainly because of more civilized audience.
