Nothing weird.

In the other thread - 40 geekzoners worked out how to beat the odds and scored $25k each.

That did cross my mind - but I’ve given up on the particular weirdness of that thread.

What's weird about it?

Right now the Lotto site is showing that 40 people won Division 1 tonight and got $25,000 each.

Eventually the Lotto site will list the stores that sold winning tickets. It may be multiple entries covering other options rather than 40 individuals.

Not if they were purchased online, they just say the area or city - Invercargill or Hamilton etc

They usually publish the individual outlets. Also since Powerball Div1 was shared between 2 people I am guessing two people played the same Lotto numbers 10 times to cover the Powerball. So that accounts for 20 of the winners. It has happened before that there have been 10 Div one winners but it turned out to be one person covering all Powerball options.

Dingbatt: 5 of the div 1 winners will collect over $52k because they get div 2, 3, etc as well. And had the right bonus number.

But still, yippee, won $million! Oh....

I'm surprised no one picked me up on this. You can't win Div 1 and Div 2 with the same line of six numbers. It works further down the chain with the lower divisions. Which is what I have seen. So no $52K I'm afraid. Serves me right for posting before 5am when only half awake.

I see two of the tickets also struck Powerball so I wonder if it was a case of a couple of punters taking the same lotto numbers multi times with different PB numbers (as posited earlier) I hadn't heard of that before this thread. Talk about an all or nothing strategy.

According to the published results unless the Powerball winners spread their spread amongst different shops each only had the 1 Div 1 prize and Powerball. 2 shops listed as selling 2 Div1 winners and 1 shop selling 4 winning tickets then 30 other outlets selling 1 winner each.

The one that sold 4 div ones to the same person I think is likely a powerball player. t I suppose 100k isn't bad. I think the worst numbers to choose are those that are also likely to be chosen by other people. eg consecutive numbers or every second number like in this case. I am surprised that there weren't more winner TBH that chose numbers like this.  Even birthdays, you are likely to get a higher number of lower numbers under 32. I recall an article being written about this subject, and the tips an tricks if you do play it. If the numbers 1,2,3,4,5,6 were drawn, I suspect that the winnings will be tiny.

SATTV:

There have been wins with four consecutive numbers before,

there is exactily the same chance that 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 will be the winning numbers as any other combination.

In case you did not know there are 3,838,380 possible combinations of winning lotto numbers.

With Powerball 38,383,800 possible combinations.

This is also why they have a cap on winnings on lotto and powerball otherwise it is economical for someone to take every combination, this is also why the lotto no longer takes computer generated or computer filled lotto cards.

There have been syndicates that have done this overseas and it takes them weeks to fill out the cards, they also have to do more cards as they often have 45 - 50 numbers.
