Getting rid of the gorse and other weeds at the Cathedral is a lot easier than dealing with the other eyesores around the Square. The old Noah's hotel is still sitting there as are the row of shops next to Noahs, not to mention the building that used to have Starbucks and the tourist information centre. Crazy that these were not demolished years ago.

Japan it seems does do earthquake recovery much better.

Move on from bleating about poor ChCh and EQ's, as if Cantabrians own the sympathy for that event. Issues with insurance companies is very sad, but thats another issue to be complained about

Pretty sure they'd have tidied up the forecourt if it had.

They had plans and a go ahead approval from members in 2012 or early 2013. Blame the wizard, philip burdon and aaron keown for that mess as well as all their minority of followers who have committed tax payers to millions of dollars when the Anglicans wanted to move forward with a plan inside the insurance payout budget

It's too easy for individuals to get in the way of projects here.

We saw that locally a few years back when one person stopped an investment that would have brought tens of millions of dollars annually to the region.

Based on this Windsor Castle, Saint Pauls, The White house should have been pulled down and Notredam should be demolished. Do you want a a plastic heritage or one that means something and has form as well as function.

False straw men: three of those four are genuinely old - several hundred to a thousand years, not a late-Victorian recreation of what they imagined "Gothic" churches looked like.
And the Brits burned down the original White House and it was rebuilt significantly differently.

So the lucky people of Christchurch are going to end up with a fake Gothic Imitation building that will be unfit for the purposes of the Anglican Diocese of Christchurch, and fit for purpose only for the people who want to take pictures of a 'pretty, old-fashioned looking' building.
Not fit for its religious purpose because no current church congregation would want to design a long thin building with the altar and clergy isolated at one end of the building, remote from the people. Modern church architecture goes much more for a structure that sets the altar at the centre of the worship space, bringing the focal point of the ceremony to the centre of the people. And a versatile space that can be readily subdivided into multiple different-sized rooms for most of the time, and only converted back to the single big space on special occasions when it will be filled, such as Diocesan Ordinations and suchlike.

But it'll look nice in Philip Burdon's photos

Yes they are old why? because they were protected repaired and rebuilt which is my point. If we keep destroying our past we lose the little heritage we have.

I'd like to see the Cathedral restored to the same look. Its an iconic part of ChCh. If they want to make it cool and modern, it becomes a non icon so put it elsewhere and put a hotel there instead, as the Square will just be an odd shaped area of little consequence. Or make the Square a park. Like a mini central park. At least it would be a feature

But it won't a a "heritage" building after they've 'fixed' it, it will be a modern building that just looks like the old one.

Instead of walls consisting of two faces of hand-cut dressed stone with a rubble filling, they will have two faces of machine-cut dressed stone with a poured concrete steel-reinforced filling. The structure and amenities will have to conform to the Building Act and the fire regulations. The new building will be nothing like the old building except that it will look the same: if it was a faithful re-creation it would never get a building permit.

That's true, but if it looked the same, and no reason why it cannot, use the same stone, they were supposed to retain them, then its the old building, of which some of it is still standing. Reinforcing where needed. While it will be a re creation, a lot of it is still standing and still old. If its built as a new building with a new look, get rid of it, we don't need a standard church in the Square.

Yes. 10 year build. Thats 2028. 17 years. That in itself will be what it will always be known by, which is a pity. I like my idea of a mini Central Park for the Square.

Much quicker. 7 years to decide how, 2 years to create it....

Depends how they do it. Potentially it will be a restoration, and it can be done. As it will be bespoke I can't see why there will be any issues with it getting building consent. They have done that sort of thing all over the world before. Guessing the stonework would need trying back to a structure. Double skin stone should never have been used in a EQ zone first place, but they probably didn't know better back then.

There is a cathedral in Europe which has been under construction for over a century, so this will be a fast build rebuilt compared to that.
