I've been looking at this over the past few months preparing to replace my carry on luggage. I got the Samsonite backpack from Strandbags for around $190 I think. It's very good quality, carried everything I needed it for.

I also bought a Matein from Amazon which arrived today. Quite a bit smaller, and ligher with lots of extras like USB etc, for about $72 landed. I am impressed. Unsure if it MIGHT be a bit small for you. The Samsonite is good.

Slightly confused: are you talking about the daily use backpack I asked about, or luggage?

I used it as carry on, and a day bag when in Melbourne both shopping and attending a tech conference.

It's not super light is my only real complaint. No USB either, but in reality I didn't really have an issue with it as I just popped a cable in the zip meetup place.

28L is pretty huge capacity. I imagine he probably wants something in the 15-20L area.

This is the one that just arrived.

It's pretty compact.Good quality, lots of good features. It's going to end up too small for what I want it for unfortunately.

I have a 'black on black' Puma backpack that has seen use over the last 5 years. It is slimline (no bulky pockets), it has separate sleeves inside that handle my 17" laptop, iPad, noise cancelling headphones etc etc. I use it around town very occasionally, but mainly for traveling as I have an 'over shoulder' bag for my day-to-day usage.

I have the Eagle Creek Wayfinder, nice backpack. I want to pick up the Aer Day Pack and Recycled Firefighter 24hr at some point.

I much prefer the understated looks of these backpacks versus the likes of Everki, etc which scream cheap laptop backpack coming through though you can already hear me with the 100's of zippers clanging around.

Never had a bag to big, had plenty to small.

The one I recommended compresses down to very thin.

Looks pretty nice for a fairly reasonably priced backpack. Can't remember if you're in Wellington, if you are and it's no good maybe I'll take a look. With a toddler I barely have time to look at all the links people have so helpfully provided and compare them, though I'll try tomorrow. Link removed too.

Have always just purchased the Targus backpack costs circa $100 for my team. Noel Leemings usually have a deal on. I use mine everyday to bike to work and as a daily laptop, field work, and lunch bag. I am only on my second in about 10 years so they last well. The guys seem to like them.
