I was having a BBQ at my place and we had a whole bunch of meats and side... My wife had made sushi as well... My daughter (about 2.5 years old at the time) who loved, loved avocado saw the saucer full of Wasabi and went to town on it... I didn't know she could scream that loudly! (She was OK after a cup of water and a big cuddle)

Barbecued venison with rehydrated dried vegetables while tramping on Stewart Island in the 1980s.

Deer hunters were dropped off on the beaches with a week's worth of supplies. They'd "camp" in the huts and spend a lot of time drinking and playing card games. By day five their supplies were running low and they would be motivated to swap generous amounts of venison for dried peas and torch batteries.

Bought my first BBQ when I was about 22, had friends over to burn some cow. I bought a budget BBQ, and it didn't have a starter button. Just gas on/off knobs and that was it.  So, flicked on the gas bottle, flicked the knobs to full.... then thought "how do I start this thing". So, off I go inside to grab a bit of paper and lighter (most of you can probably see where this is going now)....

Yup, I was "that guy".

Lit the bit of paper, threw it onto the grill..... "whooooomp" - massive ball of flame over the BBQ. Thankfully my face wasn't that close when the fireball appeared, however my arms were a slightly different story - all nicely singed and reeking of burnt hair.

Funny thing is, no one noticed what had happened..... was only when i was sitting down with the girlfriend at the time that she asked "whats that smell".......

My best BBQ story is when we tried to BBQ in a winters evening in Wellington.  It was too cold for us to stand around the barbie so we chucked on the meat, and went inside... taking turns every few minutes to check on the food.

Best bbq ever was when my wife and I were living in Japan. We had one on the deck of our apartment which was about as wide as a dinner table and slightly longer. Being Xmas  it was snowing so it took a little longer to get it up to temperature. Ended up with a great feed for us, our Japanese neighbours who thought we were slightly mad having a bbq in that weather, and some work colleagues. Wagyu beef on a cheap Costco BBQ was the go that year smile

I recently was given a new Weber Baby Q BBQ. My old BBQ had rusted itself out and so I needed a new one, also I was really keen to try the Weber after reading lots of good comments about them on Geekzone. My first attempt turned out pretty good for me (steak and sausages) and not so good for my partner (she's a veggie and it turns out that her vegetarian sausages don't take anywhere near as long to cook as my real sausages, so hers ended up burnt on the outside). But it's all a learning process, and practice makes perfect!

One of the most enduring memories of a BBQ for me was from a friend's place in London - one of those endless terraces where the back gardens are all tiny and there's no escape to anywhere but the house from the garden, as the backdoor neighbours are as close as the neighbours on either side.

The lads had stolen a shopping trolley from the local supermarket and were using it as outdoor furniture. Someone thought it'd be a great idea to make it double as a BBQ - so of course that's what happened...it got loaded up with wood, paper and coal and after a liberal squirt of lighter fluid, up it went...and so did the fence.

Once the fence was out, it actually made a great bbq...and of course we now had some extra wood from the palings we'd had to remove to prevent the fire spreading too far.

Ah...fun times.

Our new BBQ is slightly overkill for our small backyard but we’re looking forward to firing it up over the summer. Here’s a pic of it being delivered recently.

My best bbq moment is each time I pull out the Webber Charcoal Kettle BBQ, butterfly a leg of lamb, marinate it for 24 hours in my grandad's secret recipe of spices and herbs, and cook it  for 2 hours over an indirect flame.

The meat comes out tender and smoked. Love it every time I do it for when we have people over.

So this happened about 2 years ago...

Family over for dinner, we're doing steak on the barbie.

I come out to the barbie with arms full of gear, take off the cover, pop said gear off to the side, bend down and open the valve on the bottle, then open the lid....

Just like a bad movie

Avondale

Jumps out at me surprisedsurprisedsurprised

Yes I know they're harmless, but A) they're called Avondale Spiders not Onehunga Spiders, and B) you can't help it if your body flicks to flight/fight response, it's just automatic.

Anyways my Ned Flanders-esque scream brought the whole family running and they come out to me on the ground spouting a torrent of French Language which for them was a first and they've never forgotten since and never fail to give me stick about it every time we have a barbie.

So yeah, that's my story, dunno if it's MY favourite BBQ story but it's certainly theirs!

How did it taste? Well-done or med-rare?

my favourite BBQ memory is when we had the extended family to our house for Christmas for the first time a few years ago. Slow cooked a large side of lamb and a couple of chickens for a few hours. did have to zap a few parts of the chicken but everything else came out great
