Magic's audience is usually older and not really into streaming. They still listen to the radio. I still listen to the radio too.

I have a hunch that you will listen to the radio more if you live in Auckland... after all, you will, at some point be stuck in your car and bored of the music on your phone / Spotify or want to know what the news is... as you drive... another 300 meters... at 4 kilometers per hour... and another 300 meters... at 3.5 kilometers per hour...

I couldn't even if I wanted so as they have no Auckland FM frequency, part of this change is to get them on air in the important markets. I know their signage up around albany way for Magic has had an FM listed on it but thats from somewhere ages away and doesnt actually work.

I could stream it of course, but if I have access to stream stuff then there is no way I would pick a local broadcast station to stream.

It's just a shame that there isn't the technology to let them have all the stations they want broadcast to the whole of the Auckland. /sarcasm

There aren't enough FM frequencies, I listen to it on AM. The nearest FM frequency is in Rodney, which I can sort of pick up but not really. AM works for fine me (for the moment). Mind you, if this merger goes ahead - and it probably will - Magic content will most likely appear on Radio Live's FM frequency, and I daresay they'll simulcast it on AM too.

Gutted Magic listener. I messaged them over the weekend and got back "Dont worry Magic is not going anywhere" Yeah, reassured not.

I CAN'T STAND friggin talkback and it will be me done with them if they merge. Stupid idea. Unless as mentioned it is to give Magic the FM channels which they dont have in the main centres. I have tried the Rova app (broken and despite saying stream Chch get AK traffic) or can stream via TuneIn radio. Try buying an AM radio/stereo its not easy. I actually shifted to them as my old station on a 40-minute journey was down to about 3 songs and rest yak-yak.

I still listen to the radio (mostly Hauraki), its good to help find new music to add to spotify and hear a bit of banter on the radio

I have heard conflicting reports with some suggesting that the new station will replace the existing Magic, and others suggesting that Magic Talk will be a new station that simply simulcasts Magic programming outside of talk programming times.

Either way, this is likely to be a stepping stone towards completely killing off Mediaworks' talk radio business, and potentially their entire news and current affairs operation.

I emailed Mark at Magic yesterday as soon as I saw the news to see if he knew what was happening but haven’t had a reply as yet which is understandable given the circumstances.

I feel so frustrated, as an old bugger I like the format at Magic although I’m always trying to persuade them to add more artists like Jimi, The Guess Who, BTO, Doors etc but can live with what they play. If it does go partly to talk then I am gone. There are plenty of Oldies stations on the net.....

Wouldn't you be better off on The Sound - they play those artists?

Yeah they do but I find them a bit sterile compared to Solid Gold or Magic. Sometimes I tune in to them but find myself drifting back to Magic. Growing up in the 60s and 70s ( musically) I find it odd that Magic and The Sound have different playlists when during that period the stations played all genres. You could get rock, country, flower power, soul or even disco. It’s a bugger to be an old bugger and so fussy.

The Sound is more rock-oriented, whereas I guess Magic is a bit softer/easy listening.

That’s true but I still can’t get my head around the need for two stations when back in the day you could hear the music on the one station. I remember having to string up wires along our section to bring in rock stations in Quito Ecuador, Hilversun in the Netherlands, VOA or Radio Canada. Now I have an iPhone with 6000 tunes on it and coupled with a stable internet I’m in musical heaven. 😀

On a sad note I see Dunedin radio personality Neil Collins died after a recent illness. Dad would drag me into Neil’s store on a Friday night for long chats, can’t remember what they were about but as I was too young I was always in awe by the artists who he came in contact with. RIP.

They can make more money with two stations targeting specific audiences, as opposed to one station with a more broader playlist. Hell, where I grew up we had one radio station until the mid 1990's. Today there are quite a few more, all fighting for your listenership.

Sad news re Neil Collins, he was a real Dunedin radio icon indeed.

Thanks for link. Ok, so articles are often wrong but there is some hope for those of us wanting Magic for just the music, not yap yap.

But MediaWorks said it would continue to operate two radio frequencies, to broadcast Magic Talk and a separate Magic Music station.

So if I understand this correctly, the AM frequencies will become Magic Talk, and the FM ones will be for Magic Music? That would make sense.

And yes it would because in Ak, Wgtn and Chch Magic is stuck on Am.
