This is really common tactic by REA's on Trademe. When we were looking for our first home we would put in our search criteria range of like <600k and then find these nice houses so we email them for a rough price point and they would come back with and say 900 - 980k. We would then say can you remove it from showing up 600k to stop wasting peoples time and they would just go quiet.

I would guess it's so they can show their (pumped up) view numbers to try to justify their pay to the seller. "We saw a gain of X viewers this last week, there is definitely increased interest!"

yeah i totally agree that not showing the asking price is a pain in the bum for the buyer. like how am I supposed to know whether I should be looking at the listing or not! then they get very upset when you enquire about the asking price and they find it is obviously not within your budget.

Unfortunately this is more and more common these days. Especially when a house is up for tender or auction. Infact I use trademes system solely for finding out what the expected price is, as you can work it out if the price isn't listed, by ordering the houses, and comparing it to the ones that have the price listed.

The value searches do always seem to include things that do not match with what you thought you were asking for, I have noticed.

Real Estate Agents and used car dealers who think that people who are looking for a $10K car, or $600K house. Would also be interested in a $25K car or a $1.5M house.
