Our family use Life 360 to keep tabs on each other. It includes some safety features too. You can create multiple circles (family, in-laws, friends, etc)...

Therein lies the problem. Is life so desperate that you need to get yourself into that situation?

In an out-of-control situation anything that relies on access to a mobile phone app is fraught with uncertainty.

I say (assuming this is directed at women) if you're coming on a blind first date with me to a vulnerable place, then bring a friend or two.

So adding one more form as a feature to the dating app is not a big deal and a good thing if it helps someone who may be unaware of other options.

Clearly, since it happens without incident every day. Though whether it is because life is desperate or not is irrelevant.

Several points in this thread:

1) SOS: A predator is going to separate their victim from their phone. There are already a number of SOS apps and another SOS app built into the dating app isn't really going to help much.

2) Educate young males: From the preliminary info, it seems that this fella didn't have a dad to teach him the proper way to treat other people/women, and had fallen out with his family possibly/probably because he couldn't relate to other people very well. I don't think he is a typical case. What you mean to say is change our culture. This is changing not just young males, but everyone so that all corners of society puts pressure on people (directly and implied) to behave correctly. Think about how relates to you and the generally increase in your own/New Zealand's apathy. When was the last time you walked past a problem without saying/doing something - are you a cog in the big apathy machine or do you bring positive change to the world around you?

3) Take precautions: The cops have CCTV footage because she did take precautions - they met in a public place and went several other public places together before she apparently decided it was safe to go home with him. (This is assuming that she wasn't roofied etc to impair her judgement).

This is all assuming he is a predator. Post Mortem hasn't been released yet. We don't know if he has a prior history of violence etc. It could be that her death was accidental (ie drug overdose/experimentation, B&D games gone wrong, a brain aneurism etc) and that he panicked instead of calling an ambulance. An app isn't really going to help unless it is monitoring your pulse etc.

That seems like the Ferrari of personal data collection. I don't want any more apps than I have already tracking where I am, not at this detailed level.

I think having to unlock your phone, goto the app and then press SOS wouldnt be intuiative.

Doesnt apple (and maybe others), allow the function of the power button to be used as SOS? i.e. press rapidly 5+ times and it dials 111.

Yes. But a good point has been raised. A threat will separate you from your phone. However, never a bad thing to have options.

Maybe the app could have an audio streaming option.

It certainly explained what happened to that Saudi journalist who got assassinated.

It got that Toastie guy off when the kiwi chick fell of his balcony in the Gold Coast. Everyone thought he did it and no one believed she was behaving irrationally, but the audio proved it.
