They epitamise the definition of the word mitigate perfectly, as it was designed to prevent flame wars. Guess some people have nothing better to do than deride others' PC configurations.

I wish I had so little to worry about that what other people have inside a plastic box under their desk was all I had to vex me!

I don't really understand why one would feel the need to prevent flame wars though - surely they are no more important than the PC configuration? So what if people want to rant on the net? They rant everywhere else and you can always ignore them at the click of a mouse. Seems like a lot of effort for no real purpose - just give them an unmoderated "loony bin" and let them get to it!

Just another form of control, isn't it? That's all society has become. We don't live in any form of democracy anymore: it's more like a 'Lawocracy' where those with the power (eg. Lawyers, accountants, ad nauseam) dictate what happens to the proles & underlings.

ROFL! You are so right. I left my last "real" job after 17 years of corporate wage slavery because I finally realised the absurdity of the whole thing. My assistant was older than my mother and I got so fed up with trying to control the behaviour of adults so that it fell within the HR rules. They were free to go home and do what they liked, say what they liked etc within the law, yet between 8 and 5 they had to conform to a whole set of frankly pointless and absurd different rules.

The main problem comes when someone's power gets enshrined in legislation - such as having to use a certified accountant/auditor to do company annual accounts so they can then charge as they wish. Even electricians and gas fitters get that power in NZ!

Funny you should mention gasfitters. Within the industry there now lies a huge area of contention & discord. The Government, in their infinite wisdom: (NOT), have instituted a requirement for the entire Health Sector to continually upskill via way of annual training called Competency Accreditation.

Unlike the medical professions, the plumbing industry (the apprenticeship is plumbing & gasfitting) does not move nearly so quickly as other areas of the Health Sector. Upskilling is a valid means of ensuring the practitioners are conversant with today's technologies, however the levels to which they have demanded is beyond sanity & has become just another method of revenue gathering.

Given the Government appointed board of control, the Plumbers, Gasfitters & Drainlayers Board, have no interest whatsoever in preventing the general public from illegally doing their own plumbing & gasfitting (yes, it is illegal to complete the majority of tasks surrounding unauthorised water reticulation & sanitary plumbing as well as gasfitting), is it any wonder the practising workers have nothing less than contempt for this Board, lead by someone with a proven record of failure.

This is the reason why it has become so difficult to obtain a gasfitter & why costs have increased substantially over the last five years.

Add to that, -which is the reason for this history lesson- the latest conduct of the Employers' main authority: the Masters Plumber's Ass. They have stipulated that any one company can send only one employee to their sponsored upskilling courses free. Any subsequent persons shall have to pay $200+GST per annum OR join THEIR organisation at a cost of $120+GST per annum. That is nothing short of extortion. Seeing as employees would get absolutely NO benefits from an incorporated body set up to protect the interests of companies, it must come under the heading of revenue gathering & a major form of control.

Absolutely - see, I even have my pint?!

Being a Pom, the whole concept of the government having anything whatsoever to do with electricians, plumbing and gas fitting is an odd one. Of course, in the UK there are several 'professional' bodies for those trades, but very few legal obligations to ensure your plumber etc is a member. The only one I can think of is that landlords (of private rental properties, not pubs!) are required to have an annual certification of gas central heating etc done by a registered gas person. Certainly anyone with a pipe wrench can call himself a plumber!

That's the wisdom Geekzone has shown by having an off-topic forum like this one. It allows for a more conversation-like posting, albeit in written form rather than orated.

I agree that support posts should stick to a relatively structured order surrounding the header topic, but a bit of leeway should be encouraged otherwise people could soon feel aggrevied & why I no longer visit Doom9.

It's one reason I enjoy coming to Geekzone & assisting where I can because, in my view Geekzone are spot on with their moderation.

I quite like knowing I can pick any tradesman out of the yellow pages and know they have to be qualified. It gives me peace of mind. Seems like it would open a whole can of worms to allow unqualified, possibly unskilled tradespeople to sell their services to the general public.

Anyway, my 2 cents to the real topic is that GZ seems to be more strict than the average forum but bare in mind that this is primarily a solutions/advice forum isn't it? Having garbled threads would add to confusion. There are plenty of general and more relaxed forums all over the interweb
