So what did you last do to prove you are a geek to a non geek

Typically, it is when I last opened my mouth.

I’m at the in-laws this holiday period. So far it has been.

- Fixing an email sync issue in the mother in-law’s tablet.
- Showing the father in-law how to watch YouTube on his TV.
- Updating his iMac to the latest OSX version and setting up his iCloud backup.
- Setting up call forwarding from his work on-call phone to his personal mobile.
- Changing the configuration of his AV system so he can use his AV receiver on all inputs instead of just Sky.

All fairly routine stuff for the tech savvy but much appreciated from an older generation who have no idea.

So I'm a geek that OWNS a windmlll..

My windmill will still pump water... But I have to finish rebuilding one of the pumps (need to sort the leather bits). 9m tower. Fun to re-oil.

She's a Southern Cross windmill and dates back to the 40's. The design dates back to 1910 or some such.

Currently have a Ring spotlight cam with a solar panel hanging off the tower too.

I just realised I had a geek moment just the other day. My stepdaughter, who lives in Oz, was lamenting the lack of smarts on her old TV because she couldn't access FTA on-demand. So I showed her how to navigate to the http sites with her laptop and I gave her an HDMI cable to hook it up to the TV. I guess that qualifies.

The stroke is too slow. Trust me, I thought about it.

It's powering a double-stroke water pump with a 12" stroke so very slow, but very powerful. I have a 3" and 4" diameter pump for it.

It's not worth the rods (7m from the driving connection to the ground) and gearbox, and then batteries, to get it to generate any actual power.

I could possibly get it it to power its own spotlight, but it's cheaper to actually buy a decent solar one.

Some of our non-tech friends (mentioned in an earlier post) have quite old dumb TVs. One is an old 42” Panasonic that even pre-dates HD. They bought it from us years ago when we were updating and it’s still going strong.

I gathered they were getting sick of hearing other people talk about Netflix so I got them to purchase Chromecasts then I installed those for them and showed them how to cast NF.

This small piece of basic gadget magicness did a lot for maintaining my somewhat ill-deserved ‘tech expert’ reputation with those guys.

One couple admired our 2018 LG C8 OLED when they dropped in yesterday while we were watching Black Caps. They knew it was a near-new TV and remarked on it - usually the TV is not on when they come round.

I showed them some 4K HDR/Dolby Vision content from Netflix - esp. Attenborough’s Planet Earth II. They were blown away and asked if I had installed the TV myself when we bought it. I said ‘of course, it’s not difficult’.

They asked if I would go with them to purchase a new telly and then install it for them - when they return from holiday in mid-Jan. I said ‘of course - I love doing this stuff and I love spending other people’s money’.

So that’s more tech rep for me. How satisfying it will be for me might depend a bit on their budget but it will still be fun. And they will be able to ditch the CC for watching NF.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Add one more this morning. A new aftermarket head unit with BT handsfree and reversing camera installed into the FIL's converted bus/camper. He's ~7 months from retiring and will travel extensively in this bus so a good investment. The last time he took it out he reversed into a tree.

Use the windmill to pump water, lifting water to run through a turbine.

Do geeks actually need to prove it? I mean, we’re not all as handsome as bill gates but when you have ... that look it just goes without saying.

Never saw the need to prove...............

They'd figure it out when the PC got fixed, the SF read and so on.

Not that they cared, they looked upon it all as some arcane thing weirdos do.
