I started off with a REGA P1 with the upgrade kit (better cart, wool slip mat and belt) and used this for 3 years. Last year I treated myself to the REGA P6 Ania which was a huge step up sound wise.

My biggest learning was that it takes time to wear in record players when you buy brand new. Took me nearly 6 months to start hearing the subtleties..

I was gifted an older Murphy turntable (manufactured in NZ by Fisher & Paykel) for Christmas 2017 to start my journey into Vinyl. I really love how tactile this music format is, and the sound is really nice too. I’ll often get home from work on a Friday afternoon, pour a drink and putting something on for a spin.

Recently I’ve come into a Pioneer reciever from the mid 70s which I’ve had serviced and now runs like a dream. Now I’m considering upgrading the turntable to run through the reciever, but I can see this being the start of a slippery slope!

I briefly had a rega somethign many years back which was basically a MDF plank with the stuff on it. Was horrible compared to my old 1200s that I briefly had when I thought DJing was an interesting thing (bought used, sold them for what I paid not long after and am now kicking myself all these years later)

Later on when I had got some special edition game that came with the soundtrack on vinyl I needed to get something again, so got the AT 120 when it was on sale at one of noel leemings sales at the showgrounds - still more expensive than amazon by about twice but the best it had been locally that I could find at the time when there on my phone looking on pricespy (cant remember what I paid in total)

Its no 1200 but so much better than the rega was. Very microphonic tho, more than I remember the 1200s being, even moving something on the table the turntable is on will come out the speakers and like all vinyl playback forget doing it loud with lots of bass. Ive not bothered changing anything on it since I got it and its basically idle now because of inconveniance and now having stuff piled ontop of it.

I miss those 1200s..

I've got one of these sitting in the wardrobe not being used. I may get it up and going again some time in the future, but my BIG stereo system is sold, awaiting modifications and awaiting a transition to a new theatre setup... but with a small apartment it may just end up as a high end soundbar sort of scenario.

There are a LOT of choices in the market, make sure you pay attention to the fundamentals though.

Good isolation can be needed (especially if you have wooden floorboards), removing the lid helps immensely and cleaning records should be done more often than you think... have a look at the fluid in a spin clean after you wash 2-3 brand new pressings!

Cheers all! Seems to be a pretty wide range from the cheap and cheerful to the higher end.

Did some browsing over the weekend and spoke to the guys at AVWorld and have added the RP3 and VPI Clifwood to the potential shortlist. The Audio Technica AT-LP5 also looks interesting and very good value for money with the built in phono stage.

The musings continu!

Pro-ject Debut Carbon with OM-30, perspex platter and external speed control. Haven't used it for a while but when I do it sounds pretty awesome. The OM-20 is equivalent to a 2m Bronze so quite an upgrade from the OM-10 it came with which is like a 2m red.

SO inevitably my eyes are roaming upwards.

Currently chewing on a Rega Planar 3 Vs the Planar 6 with Ania cart. The latter is probably more in balance with the rest of my system, but would leave me significantly less money left over to buy records with!

I'm using a Technics TT with a Dynavector 10x5 MC cartridge.  Reason is that it was in an EQ damaged house being demolished, the demolition contractor owned the contents and was going to dump it, so cost was $0.

For the record - a person born in 33 was 45 in 78.
