floydbloke: Go directly to Jail, do not pass Go, do not collect $200!
High school was an IBM shop. PS/ValuePoint machines with Warp 3. Not sure what the server was; there was a Win 95 server for the library but I'm not sure what the actual computer rooms were on at the time.
jonherries: 17 + Bletchley Park and National Computer museum - both very cool and next door to each other.
Haven’t seen anything about Lego...
Jon
Definitely add in the Lego, I have a number of models and mini figures on the desk at work, as well as the big box at home to build with.
If you are going down the geek tourism route, maybe add in Porthcurno telegraph museum in the UK too? That or any visiting any museum with significant geek focus.
Done all of the items on the list + bonus points, except D&D and that won't be changing, played plenty of other games though.
Have programmed in assembly, but with the changing age demographics, it might be interchangeable for some poeple with build & programme a 3d printer or equivalent.
Would love to see a rocket launch in person.
17/21
+ ran my own BBS in the dial up days (after getting my first computer at 23 and owning it for 2 months). Ran redhat linux for fun, ran OS/2 for fun in the 90s. Ubuntu for years, years ago. Built a "hackintosh".
The ones I haven't:
12. Founded/actively considered founding a tech startup. Helped someone start who later became a local ISP, but wouldn't want to do this myself. I hate people too much.
16. Read Dune, Foundation, and the Hobbit + Lord of the Rings (potentially fraught trinity there). Read dune, read and thought hobbit and LOTR are crap, never will watch the movies. Never read Foundation.
17. Watched Star Wars, Star Trek and Doctor Who (again, potentially fraught trinity). Saw the original SW... meh. Original ST was just ok. DW as a kid... yawn. So I have "seen" them, but not counting.
21. Worn a t-shirt or hoodie displaying a computer game or science-fiction character. Currently wearing one of my many Deadpool t-shirts though. The majority of my t-shirts are music related.
I'm not even slightly in the industry anymore (did systems, networking, database management, OOP in the late 90's while in my late 20s, JS and C# recently for fun as online courses). I hate people too much to work in an office.
Now I build fire appliances (and about to go back to school and become a boilermaker, have been a qualified spray painter since 1989)
BUT, I still keep my hand in.
4 tablets, countless phones, laptops still with varying OSs... Windows Insider. Beta tester for various things. Have my own personal android app for some home control, then Google Home came along....
Have 8 Google Homes, a GH Hub, 3 Chromecasts, and a CC Audio. Sensibo, Hue, Harmony, a pi running flight trackers (other pi doing other things), weather station, Ring cams, Arlo cams, IP cams, solar+monitor..
Basically bringing our 1940s stone cottage into the 21st century.
Watched Revenge Of The Nerds really should be on that list.
I can check off all the items in the current list, except...
11. Built a smartphone app.
Smart phones are a fad, server software is my thing. Considered building one for the volunteer work I do, but the interest wasn't really there.
12. Founded/actively considered founding a tech startup.
Watch this space.
13. Played Dungeons + Dragons (tabletop or computer game). More bonus points if you own dice with something other than six sides.
16. Read Dune, Foundation, and the Hobbit + Lord of the Rings (potentially fraught trinity there).
17. Watched Star Wars, Star Trek and Doctor Who (again, potentially fraught trinity).
I've seen Star Wars, a bit of Star Trek, and hated Lord of the Rings. Peter Jackson, when are you going to release a remastered Meet The Feebles? PM me with details.
I've also not seen and refuse to see The Matrix.
21. Worn a t-shirt or hoodie displaying a computer game or science-fiction character.
Does a Pedobear shirt count? Worn once, for a work function (IT industry obviously).
I also have a nice rack :)
Have done all of 1,2,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,14,17,18,19,20 and 1 bonus point of server hardware in the hall cupboard
still working on the others
17.5/21; I didn't realise I was such a geek.
Now I have a New years' resolution to complete! (the other 3.5 on the list- smartphone app, tech startup, Hobbit+Lord of the Rings, IOT & T-shirt)
Other candidates for build exercises:-
NAS
Asterix server
Auto-closing garage door
Myth TV recorder
8 bit retro computer
reel-reel RS232 data storage (these are awfully slow)
Teletype printer that prints ASCII (also awfully slow)
Also would be interested in any one else with contributions to the list.
Got a ways to go:
Done:
2. Crimped / punched down an ethernet plug or jack.
5. Built a website.
6. Used a multimeter and soldering iron.
7. Rooted/jailbroken/flashed custom firmware on to some device (bonus points if you've broken that device in the process but managed to recover it).
9. Been asked by a family member to fix something technological (bonus points if you've later been accused of causing other, entirely unrelated, technological issues by helping out that one time).
10. Member of Geekzone.
14. Consciously used open source software.
17. Watched Star Wars, Star Trek and Doctor Who (again, potentially fraught trinity).
19. Built your own PC.
17/21 for me, not bad. I just need to work on the others.
ZL2TOY/ZL1DMP
Damn, I also built my own pc. I keep forgetting things. It was a long time ago.
Plesse igmore amd axxept applogies in adbance fir anu typos

coffeebaron: I think installing a master filter should be on the list :)
Aredwood: I accidentally did that when I was 16. [...] So I connected 1 filter where the line came into the house and ran another cable to my room to connect to the modem. As I didn't want to pay for 5 filters.
Same here, also in the 128k days.
I think my 7/21 is as good as it is going to get, unless I can count each T shirt separately!
