My wife's great grandfather killed most of the cats in the town (feral and pets)  that he lived in with poison, as he was a bird lover and could see the damage they were doing.  This early last century.

He purchased a large block of native bushland and donated it to the crown, the reserve is named after him. (not "cat murderer reserve" BTW)

I don't mind cats myself - and they're probably a minor part of the overall destruction wreaked on NZ birdlife.  I witnessed a feral boar munching down on baby seagulls a few weeks ago, as if stoats, cats, dogs, humans etc weren't bad enough.

One of the saddest things I learned was that there used to be flocks of thousands of kakariki in Chch, every last one poisoned deliberately as they plundered grain and vege gardens.

A problem with fleas and cats is that cats lack an enzyme that breaks down pyrethrum/pyrethroids, so relatively "safe" insecticides to humans and most mammals can be very toxic to cats - ie - large quantities of fly spray.

I don't have a problem with the cats. My complaint was about the fleas.

Rod for your own back.... not to mention the native wildlife.

Feeding ferals would get YOU shot most places.

I'm not against pet cats, but you're encouraging native wildlife death, enjoy your fleas.

They are not feral. They would be classed as strays. Because we feed them they tend to stay near the house. If we didn't they would spread out and do far more damage to local wildlife. As pointed out above by @Fred99, people do a hell of a lot more damage to native species than cats ever will. Take your indignation somewhere else.

You seriously think you're their only food source?? Get effing real! They're feral. They never had a home. They've never had human contact, they're breeding hundreds more feral cats.

Try watching "Secret Life of the Cat".

Some people damage wildlife...Some people kill people....

One cat will kill more birds than any one human.

Look at Kapiti Island, or any other island sanctuary in NZ.

Like I said, Enjoy your fleas.

Edit: A "stray" is a cat/dog that has strayed from home... Your sh***y murdering animals are feral.

I am not interested in pursuing this. There are other threads for that. The topic here is fleas.

We do not live in a bush area. We are surrounded by paddocks filled with cows and sheep. The runoff from excrement, fertiliser and pesticides turned our stream into a dead pool years ago. It used to be full of crayfish and eels. I haven't seen one for a very long time.

I live between 2 dairy farms, with no other houses for ages... you know what there is? BIRDS!

You really think birds only live in bush?

You're deluded. And you're right, the topic IS fleas, attached to feral cats. You reap what you sow.

We also have plenty of birds, especially natives like Tui, Kereru, fantails. A real chorus in the mornings. I rarely see the cats target birds, but the three or four I have seen were sparrows and swallows. There have been no blackbirds or magpies around lately. I don't know if the cats have anything to do with that but I certainly don't miss them.

This thread has run its course. Mods can lock it any time.

You don't see crap, because cats eat birds at night... You really think a bird, in daylight, would let a cat anywhere near it????? Jeeezus, talk about no idea!

No, you didn't get the answer you wanted, so mods can lock it now.

MadEngineer: Strays/feral same difference.

Don’t feed them.

You do have a problem with the cats - fleas.

If he wants to feed the cats he'll feed them. If you don't like that tough titties.

It's not feeding the cats that's his problem, it's the untreated cats that support the adult fleas and/or bring in new fleas. The usual treatment cycle uses treated cats as bait for the fleas. New fleas head for cats, get poisoned & die. Allowing untreated cats means there'll never be an end to fleas..

We had a similar problem last year. It took quite some doing but we are finally sorted.

We have a dog and 2 cats. We always treat them earlier but for some reason my wife forgot and it was a nightmare.

We had to :

1) Treat the Animals

2) Have carpet cleaned, then

3) Took everything we could off the carpet

4) had a pro come and do the house

5) 2 weeks later fleas were jumping on us

6) Flea guy came back and did the whole house again (gratis which was nice).

7) retreated animals.

We had seriously got to the conclusion we would have to burn the house to the ground. I have heard of people who have stripped the whole house of all soft furnishings including mattresses carpet, towels, EVERY and thrown them out or burned them moved, out, had the house treated 2-3 times and then moved back in to solve it. I was very glad to avoid that.

Now we have multiple alarms set up so that the pets get treated.
