A little punctuation would make this readable. As it stands - not so much.

The more specific a buy/sell group on Facebook, the better...

"Chch Buy/sell/swap anything"... Caution, here be dragons that lack a brain or any sort of decorum.

"Chch 4AGE/buy/sell only"... (Moderated). Great stuff.

Cheers -N

I have had a table tennis table listed on trademe for a week, not a single bid.

Put it on facebook marketplace this morning, 8 people said they were 'interested' within 1/2 hour of listing.

Then this woman sends this...

...

Shelz:I am so f****n wild gggggrrrr

...

Shelz:Really well ***k you I find people like this so disrespectful I would never do this to people if I was selling something as I was brought up with manners & respect

...

Shelz:Well all you need to do is say I have others interested before me but never mind I am use to having things sold underneath me

...

Haha, if it's any consolation to you, it has provided me with a few minutes of amusement.😄

If you guys want to watch a 5h1t show, join a few "Pay it forward" pages.
People are lying about their situations to get free stuff, climbing over others with spiked boots. Abusing people who refuse to give something to them for free cause they want it. The list goes on.

My head hurts now from knowing that these kinds of people exist.

It was written while walking down Queen Street but I'm sure most people will get the basic idea

Our local area has a pretty well moderated Facebook trading page, and being an island is pretty easy to not get timewaters from outside the area.

We use it quite a bit for offloading things (usually for free) and it is quick and efficient.

Have bought quite a few things off there (looking at a boat at the moment), and sold quite a few things too. I'm always reasonable on price (I'll generally price things below the Trademe prices - after all, it is pickup, I don't have to pay success fees, and the audience is smaller). I've sold about 4 iPhones on there after upgrades for my wife and I - each one has sold for about $50-100 less then the TM price, and in less than an hour.

I do see a lot of things on there priced ridiculously (dreamers), never any comments on their listing, never sell.

shelz: Well I said I want it lol & I do I have had things sold underneath me before & it's really rude to do this & disrespectful
If some wants it it should be to that person 1st thanks I am really wanting it & meant it I don't want to muck around

(This is despite me having told her that others were already looking at it before her)

Me: sorry, i had 3 people interested at the same time
it wasn't clear that you wanted it,
apologies if i misunderstood

Shelz:I am so f****n wild gggggrrrr

I find this quite ironic, she's complaining about disrespect and then is swearing at you, and hadn't said she wanted to buy.  Spent more time abusing you than securing the deal...

I've had ups and downs with TM. Lately, I've found facebook groups pretty good for flicking off lower value things I wanna get rid of.

I had one plonker who really annoyed me however. I got a trinket listed for $4. Asked me what my best price was. I said $3. Said he was also interested in an old saw bench I'm flicking off. Same thing, best price? I said $40. Said he'd come look at the saw bench on Saturday, after mucking me about for two evening pickups. Then the tosser sends me a message saying he's gonna have to pass on them.

If someone has to pass on a three dollar item then I'm quite glad I didn't ever meet him in the end.

I put an old Xbox on FB local group once........ someone said theyd take it straight away. But wanted me to meet them at the local dentist (they had an appointment)....was only 2 mins down the road so agreed. Then on the day, they changed it and said I could meet them in the local township - said no, you can come pick up, was happy with previous appt as it was 2mins away but not 15mins away. They went grrr about it.... but said fine.... then contacted to say car had broken down so could I meet somewhere else but they wouldnt have money so would pay me next day. Said Id let them know asap.

Then realized who they were - someone who had sold us some clothing few months earlier as "in new condition" and we found some had holes in them etc and refused to reply to us about it. So I blocked them.

Hour later a friend messaged me going "do you know this person" and sent me the buyers name - I asked why, and apparently the buyer had gone into another group demanding my contact details from anyone who knew me, and had even put up my FB profile photo! I was like WTF....

My friend replied to the buyer and told them why I wasnt dealing with them. They went off.

I soon had private messages from random people saying "lucky break there, known scammer etc".

That was prob one of the last times I sold anything via FB.

Handsomedan:

My pet peeve is all of the above, plus "Would you take $75?"

My answer - "yes, I'll add a Buy Now of $75"

Result - auction passes in with no bids.

Why waste my time? Trade Me Buyers really are a frustrating breed.

Yup, had one of those a couple weeks ago. Item was BN of 120, they said theyd do 100 with postage. I said 100 + postage. No reply.

Auction ended, offered it at 100+post, no takers.

So I relist. Immediately, "Will you take $100 BN +postage" from the same guy. I said sure and modified the auction.

Didnt take it.

Blacklisted.

Next.

If you want to read about what happens to scammers, join the Dirty South Car Club page. See a few posts about scammers there and they generally end up with a few bits of themselves broken... Got to love vigilante justice!

TBH I've not really had that much problem with TM. I'm always really clear what items are for pickup only and what i will consider shipping. Anytime there's been a hiccup it's almost always something I missed and put down incorrectly in the ad.

Maybe it's an auckland thing? I can imagine driving from south to north to pick up something is a lot of time and petrol, esp. for cheap items.

My experience is much the same. Beyond clarity and sticking to what I say, there are other steps I take to actively avoid many of the worst members:

  • Blacklist any trader who I don't want to deal with whether they are a seller or buyer, bidder or questioner: abusive, time wasting, failing to keep appointments, demanding, suspicious, etc.
  • For each new listing, check "Allow bids from authenticated members only" on the Pricing & Duration page.
  • For listings that are pickup-only, I look at the bidder location and their pick-up history in their buyer feedback. I'd even delete their bids and blacklist them if I'm really suspicious of them.

All that and they still expect us to pay a premium for their junk service?
yeah nah.

I've stopped listing on TradeMe, the fees do my head in, also the waiting for an auction to end. At least FB you can get a semi instant response. Talk about un-policed though, its the damn wild west.

I think there is a lot less competition on TM than a few years ago. Got a Nespresso knock off for $1 on TM (probably due to the odd closing time)  sold it next day on FB for $30.

So long as you have eyes wide open on FB, its pretty good. Few low ball offers just get ignored or counter offer with asking price, that usually shuts them up.

Also be prepared for people who can barley string a sentence together.

Don't see TM getting any better unless they seriously drop the fees and if they do it might be too late. Seems to be a drug we are all weening ourselves off.
