I'm always curious why people care about comments? I see it adding absolutely zero to a news story.
I'd be happy if they got rid of them and the clickbait.
Isn't this just a bunch of people commenting on a news item?

I am 100% in favour of these changes. Stuff comments are where the absolute worst of NZ tends to gather.
Let me introduce you to the Trademe message board.
I thought that was Facebook?
Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation
What? Stuff is moderating comments? Mr Blundel would be so pleased. Now they just have to stop them completely and he will be ecstatic.

That's the problem. Many comments have nothing at all to do with the news story.
They do moderate them anyway before the comment is made live. The voting change makes sense because it can be easily taken advantage of. I find the comments very helpful, because they can often correct parts of the story if it is wrong. Also it can provide balance and give people differing opinions. It is a little like discussing the news story around the watercooler.
Stuff are so haphazard in getting around to publishing comments that people would either write a very short low quality comment or use the up or down vote buttons on the already published comments. Why waste time in leaving a big comment when it might not be published at all? The only way to be reasonably sure of getting your comment posted is to get up at 3.57 am & write a comment or two by 4.12 am. I am joking but good luck with getting your comment published on a story that already has quite a few comments.
Anyway, Stuff and The Herald are getting worse and worse with pages filled with stupid clickbait type headlines.
And then I read this gem from the Editor:
'Readers comment more than 7000 times per day on Stuff. All comments are moderated and about a third never see the light of day because they breach our rules for comments. Of the comments that are posted, most are fair expression – but it only takes a little toxin to poison an entire stream.'
Absolutely no mention of the thousands of perfectly good and reasonable comments that never get published due to Stuff's lack of resources/time to moderate publish comments.
Stuff never reacted well (i.e. never published) any comments critical of their standard of reporting, or pointing out factual errors in their article. Can't see that changing in the new regime.

Another good way of ensuring a comment never saw the light of day was to comment negatively on a story involving one of Stuff's advertisers. However, they would publish almost any comment critical of the CCC because they know readers love that!
CCC? Christchurch City Council?
Exhibit A of needing to turn off comments on social media
https://www.facebook.com/thepress/posts/10157105991747618
And if you search the first couple of posters names under the page, you'll see comments on almost all the recent associated event and gun control articles with similar. It's the faster medium to respond how they please without recourse.

Yes, should have named it more fully!

Maybe the quality of comments is better on local articles. Stuff started Neighborly - isn't that the place for this now?
Neighborly is another Stuff thing that annoys me. You register with Stuff to enter the comments lottery, & then can't use the same log-in to read about lost cats and tagged fences on Neighborly. Anyway, I don't care I have not bought a copy of the Press for at least 3 years.
Theres been times in the past where IRC/forum members overseas have asked me "whats going with such and such over there ?" - I'd have no clue what theyre talking about. Would turn out that their local news suppliers knew more about what was going on in NZ than the Herald/Stuff did.........
