I'd be 100% certain that's a fake news urban legend.

If it was somehow true I'd have absolutely no sympathy - nobody in their right mind would buy a $20,000 watch from a random on TradeMe without having it independently appraised - and anybody who has such a watch would be more than happy to do such an appraisal for peace of mind for both parties.

The story simply doesn't stack up.

Agree. It does not pass the sniff test. Sounds like a fake news/clickbait/urban legend anecdotal account that got picked up and distorted by a media outfit that doesn't check its sources. I'm sure the real story will come out in a few days.

I receive a neighbourhood watch email every week or two, and a local policeman lists the crimes reported in our area. This was just one of a number of incidents.

It is not unheard of authorities spreading urban legends - some might have done that unknowingly.

Doesn't mean it's true.

Just look at the number of schools who have spread fake news stories which have been well meaning, but fake.

There used to be a few people on TradeMe on here, I wonder if any see this and can confirm/deny the story because to me (as a watch person) it simply does not stack up.

Buying a 2nd hand watch is very different from (say) buying a 2nd hand car. If you'd told me the story was a car I'd be inclined to believe it as lots of people buy cars unseen - a watch person willing to drop $20k would simply never buy something like that unseen.

I recently took a complaint from a member of the public who brought a Rolex watch on TradeMe for $20000. He had no reason to believe that the seller was acting fraudulently as they had a good record with Trade Me from previous sales. The money was transferred by the victim who stated they would send the item. Unfortunately he received a phone call later that evening stating that the account had been hacked.
The investigation is ongoing but it looks as though the victim has lost $20,000.

Ouch!

Dopey, ridiculous, stupid etc . FFS.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

The sceptic is strong in this one.

DM me your email address, I'll send you the email...the crime report is written by a local cop who works nearby. I'm pretty sure the police don't make up stories.

I sold one on TM for $13,000.

It was genuine. I've seen watches over $50k on TM.

I wouldn't pay $20k for a Rolex aside from a handful of rare models (COMEX diver, red letter Sub etc) regardless though.

tripper1000: At $20K I wouldn't buy anything from anyone in any market place without first inspecting/touching it. I reckon most sensible people of finite income would be the same.

I've purchased a few cars and boats over the years for double that amount from the other end of the country that I haven't seen in person, with no problems at all - but I have had them checked out by reputable people first.

...so you had a trusted proxy inspect it/touch if first - different, but the same as what I said.

If this story is true, then I think most of us will agree is reaffirms the olde proverb, "A flood and his money are soon parted".

I bought a Tag Heuer Monaco on Trademe sight unseen around 10 years ago. It had a certificate of authenticity from an Auckland watch maker in the TM photos, and the serial number in the report matched that shown in pictures of the watch.

I corresponded back and forth with the seller a couple of times after the sale but before payment was made which reassured me that it wasn't a scam. I guess things could still have gone wrong. He couriered it to my door, but I must admit I worried a bit that it could vanish whilst in the hands of the courier company. Thankfully it didn't.

The watch was valued at about $9k but I paid significantly less than that. This was at the height of the GFC though so there were many many people offloading luxury items around that time.
