There is a difference. You don't always know for certain that those people on the mountain are dead. Especially when they are begging you for help.

I can't believe there are that many people who haven't heard of helicopters! Don't they know there is a better way to get to the top!

Good luck getting a helicopter up there with the winds, temperatures and thinness of air.

It's probably possible in some situations, but I wouldn't bet my life on it.

One commentator said the deaths were probably from low cost packages. But he also warned that if you hire 2 sherpas for each climber like the deluxe companies would, that in itself cause congestion.but he said there is very little data available and he can't verify what he said, he is an expert climber not a journalist.

Aaahh... Sherpas. Dangerous job for a couple of thousand bucks a year:

Yup - its an alternative form or tourism that allows people to visit the poo holes of the world - getting their jollies gawking at people dying of war, crime, starvation ad disease. A sad but true thing.

As a kid it was my ambition to climb Everest and K2. Even if I could I wouldn't do Everest. Sir Ed must be spinning like a gyro in his grave.

Last thought - If the Mt is so sacred to Tibetens etc - how do they feel about the desecration of that beautiful wonder?

Base camp 1 is only just possible I believe. Higher is a definite no go. Generally they get people from Base Camp 1 to lower to get them out.

I'd be so upset if I did all the training to climb that sucker and not be able to enjoy it. I'd rather be given a date or window of when I could climb and know you don't get into that deadly situation. By making it scare they could potentially charge more for better weather spots and finally make some money for the poor locals who get cents per KG of gear they lud up the mountain.

The trouble is that Everest tourism is a major earner for Nepal. They don't want to limit it too much as it would hurt their economy. If the increase the price of tickets it will shut out serious mountaineers, and make Everest exclusivley for rich tourists being dragged up. If a ticket is only valid for a certain window it will lead to climbers taking a risk on a summit attempt as poor weather closes in and their window is running out.

Tickets are also for more than one side. Remember the Chinese control one of the approaches too. Do they and Nepal coordinate?

Much the same as we do about some of our beautiful wonders - money soothes the soul.
