Dynamike: I find the weather forecasts at https://www.weatherwatch.co.nz/ to be far more accurate than those of the MetService. Nowadays I only use the MetService for the rain radar.

Agree, I find WeatherWatch much more accurate/reliable.

Was thinking about this this morning (was going to start another thread but did a search first) and have some thoughts:

1. Why doesn’t MetService let me pay to get rid of ads in the iOS version of their app.
2. I use Dark Sky still because the app is brilliant but they don’t have rain radar data here (which exists as it is in the MetService app). Another option is Carrot weather - the best bit from Dark Sky is the “it’s about to rain alert”. We used that in Ireland all the time to bring the washing in or choosing to put a coat on.

This says to me there is a problem with this space in the MetService - it would be interesting to see if they have any plans for the future?

Hi,

Have a read of this thread - the app used to be paid, but was made free in 2017

It contains replies from Metservice

Yes, anecdotally we find whoever sources the iOS weather app info is a bit more accurate than metservice.

rb99:

In my uninformed opinion, it doesn't help that the Metservice seem to be incapable of predicting any kind of actual weather, like a bit of rain or a bit of a breeze, without some kind of watch or warning about it, and of course NZ Herald using words like Severe, Storm, Gale on the main story, so everyone heads over to the Metservice site...

It's not 100%.

Rain for instance, Whenever it said rain for Auckland, I could take that as a maybe. Ranui got very little, a bit of spitty maybe, I'd drive to work in Albany into bucketing down with flooding around our building, winds and all sorts. Then drive home and find the gardens dry.

Now I am in hawkes Bay it's the same.

It may rain, a decent amount but often, here anyway, it's minor. No doubt in the hills they are soaked.....

Yeah looks like the thought/question of offering an ad removal option was never answered and they have a bunch of different apps they are trying to maintain. Looks like they are making more money than they planned so maybe there is an opportunity to do more in this space but I wont hold my breath.

It's now 5:50pm 30 July.

Metservice has a time machine it seems - https://www.metservice.com/skifields/the-remarkables

It has a weather forecast that is generated on 1 August, 8:21am. And I bet it will still be wrong.

Are we (Canterbury) expecting bad weather?

From MetService Radar page:

"Our Canterbury radar is undergoing urgent maintenance and will be offline until further notice. During this time our website will display a composite image from nearby radars, but accuracy will be reduced for the Canterbury area."

Happened time before last when we were expecting bad weather.
