I suspect some of the negativity about "supermarket coffee" comes from forums like "Coffesnobs" - based in Aus.

Visit a few Aussie supermarkets, and you'll see why, the selection is grim, mainly vacuum-packed bricks, mainly imported.

NZ supermarkets have a good range of beans from local specialist roasters. Maybe not "boutique", but we have it good here.

I am a coffee snob, but I'm quite happy at times to buy from any of my local supermarkets. Consistent roast from commercial operations like L'affare, Hummingbird etc, so I don't need to adjust my grinder, fresh, vented packs, often on special ~ $32/kg.

Well, it can be hard to go past the bargain that is the 1kg brick of over-roasted and bitter yet strangely flavourless Aurora ground coffee for $15 at my local P&S!

Joking - I agree with the above, but noting the proviso I made earlier - the problem in determining freshness of supermarket beans, given the lack of consistency in 'best before' dates.

That said, I think buying beans vs ground coffee makes a more substantial difference than the roast date. Someone gave me the remainder of a packet of L'affare ground coffee the other day after it had been open a week or so, and (from my perspective) it really was unusable. Buying a decent enough grinder (which isn't that expensive) is probably the best-value way to improve quality if one is using ground beans.

I get green beans for $15-20/kg from greenbeanhouse.co.nz and roast them with a hot air gun.

Probably the best coffee bang for buck you can get.

Havana used to be $4 delivery for 1kg (about $37 a kg for beans) , and pretty easy to order off (even easier after I suggested they implement a reorder last button).

Main advantage over the supermarket is they're roasted that day....not whenever the supermarket took delivery and decided to put it out on the shelf.

Mojo are $35 for 1 kg when I walk in and pick up a bag from their roastery at Shed 9(?).

I buy Vittoria Arabica beans at my local Countdown when they are on rotating special (every couple of weeks) for $14-17 a KG instead of $32.

2 espressos in the morning and I am good to go to work

That's a good memory. Never really had the time and energy to push it. Been a long struggle doing stuff with chronic fatigue. Managing the fatigue a lot better these days and Rural IT & Broadband keeps me busy but with enough flexibility to rest when I need to.
