Bung: Does Geekzone have a random watchlist generator? I received an email timed as soon as xpd posted advising that a new message had been posted to this subject I was supposedly subscribed to. I'm used to my scrolling thumb landing on forum buttons on the righthand side of the screen but I frequently get email prompts to topics posted when I'm not browsing the forum. Is Peter Reader stirring the pot when he gets bored?

Colour me genuinely surprised that kiddie porn isn't illegal everywhere, but yes that's about the only thing I personally draw the line at.

Ok, so what if the Deepnudes being circulated were of your (over 18?) daughter, or a friend? And that person then committed suicide? How about then? You prepared to say it's fine for them to be circulated on the Internet?

The dogmatic "information wants to be free" BS leads to all sorts of clearly unintended stances.

There are so obviously many cases where it's clearly better for the dissemination of information to be suppressed that to claim otherwise makes it look like the principles you hold close are wrong, cruel, ill considered, naive or just plain stupid.

It's easy to recite a soundbite, but it's not always responsible. You've already conceded an exception... I find it very strange you've said that's the only exception you'd personally make.

Fake nudes isn't a new problem, people have been photoshoping fake nudes of people for years. Just because the deep nudes program makes the ability to create them more accessible doesn't change that equation. If someone is so fragile that they are going to kill themselves over that, I think it would just be a matter of time and another cause even if that fake didn't exist. If it was a family member or friend I'd be sad of course, but I wouldn't run around advocating for tighter internet controls or more censorship.

No place for it. Just because it's something some people may want or it's something people have been doing manually doesn't make it any more ethical or (personally) moral to automate it.

I wonder if it's actually a positive thing for a famous person. Any phone hack from now on you can simply pass off as being fake? That's the only way I look at it? Yes tough if you are a young female and it circulates around school/work etc, but I think you claim it's fake, and that's a great fake and you're happy with it.

Took me a long time to learn that if there was something I was embarrassed about and someone else knew, it was better to front foot it. Walk into the office, oh you'll never believe what I did on the weekend...

That said, it's kind of typical that it doesn't work on men.

This one was a trivial gimmick. In the not distant future you might have to ask yourself how you feel about being faked in to video of various kinds I'll leave to your imagination. These are interesting questions.

You might wish that the inventors of the internet had thought more about what would happen when the genie was let out of the bottle, but that is a whole other story, as the saying goes.
