I'd say under the CGA, an oven should last more than 8 years (but probably not a huge amount more).

i would think it should last longer - an oven is a pretty basic appliance after all. It's just a heater in box (OK, it's a bit more complicated, but you get the idea).

the problem with what consumer recommends is it doesnt take into account use, which is one of the major factors which reduces the life of a product.

If you are cooking in your oven every day, or multiple times a day it will have a shorter life span than someone who uses their oven 3-4 times a week. that there is a doubling or halving of the life of the oven which ever way you look at it.

so while its nice to have the above figures IMO they should not be taken as this is how long something should last without considering how much use it has.

I'll be interested to know what solution the retailer offers here.

A friend had a similar issue with lack of replacement parts a while back although this was a router.

He had bought a reasonably fancy consumer router (Cisco or Linksys I think) about 3 years prior and the power adapter gave up the ghost, they told him the parts were no longer made and he was out of luck.

He mentioned the exact same thing that is mentioned earlier in the thread, that replacement parts must be supplied for a reasonable time under the CGA and after a bit more prodding they sent him an entirely new router which also happened to be an updated version as the old one wasn't available.

Fair Go might like to hear from you.

Tell them you saw the piece (it is on the TVNZ website).

Fair go!? Really? The guy hasn't even TALKED to them about a solution yet and allowed them the option to come up with an alternative!

Honestly, you guys. Not every situation requires a thermonuclear option.

I believe all he is doing is saying that the exact same issue was on FairGo a couple of weeks back with a Parmco range. Until FarGo got involved they was getting no where.

I had a parmco washing machine which died every 2 years. Each time they tried to blame it on me, when quite clearly the pump and drainage fitting was a POS, and each time I had to pull the CGA angle.

After the third time (I will say parts were available if expensive if I was going to pay) I gave up and bought a new washing machine and will never buy from them again.

While you do need to be reasonable and polite parmco are an absolute nightmare with warranty support.

Right, but a (reasonable) person is required to at least GIVE the company a chance to rectify an issue. Fair Go wouldn't even be slightly interested in it, till that had been done in the first place.

The issue I have, is that the first reaction but the overszealous people in a lot of these threads is something along the lines of "don't bother being reasonable, smash them with the CGA, threaten them with DT don't forget Fair Go will plaster their name all over the TV Scape".

98% of issues don't require this.

Absolutely agree. That is why in my first reply, I said that they should be providing an acceptable solution to the OP.Whether that means they can find spare parts by ordering them in from overseas, I don't know. But it seems a real waste for it to be junked , due to not being able to get a relatively small but important part.

Are the hinges repairable? I might be in the minority here but I wouldn't expect a brand new oven out of it. It sucks they don't have the replacement parts and thats not your fault either. I would say a discount on a replacement oven or a partial refund would be fair if the hinges cannot be repaired or replaced.

You can usually get replacement parts for oven springs and hinges, as they are one of the few moving parts in an oven. Maybe something can be custom made for it, and maybe that is part of the solution

Absolutely. I wasn't intending for the OP to go running straight to Fair Go. I was more making them aware that FG had a Parmco story only a few weeks ago, and that it wasn't until FairGo got involved that Parmco actually remedied that situation. It annoys me that a lot of the companies that appear on Fair Go fix the issues only after Fair Go gets involved - it should never have to get that far (Insurance companies are the biggest offenders here). In this case, if it were me (and it has been me with Parmco in the past) I would have liked to have known about the Fair Go story, and I likely would have brought that story up in my discussions with them if it felt like I was hitting a brick wall.

I wonder where I would go to find replacement parts for an oven given the manufacturer no longer has replacement parts for that model? If custom made, where would I start down that path? Also the cost would have to be sensible because it doesn't make sense to spend a huge amount of money on getting a part designed and manufactured for a product that is pretty "normal" at best.

To date (after letting them know nicely, my feelings and a desire for them to provide a reasonable resolution given their legal responsibility) they have come back asking for proof of purchase before forwarding this up the chain to someone else - not that proof of purchase has anything to do with them not holding parts for a product range that is not that old, but am humouring the situation and have sent it through...radio silence for now. So a little boy waits.
Meanwhile the door is held close with a bungy cord :D
