I agree with that article, a bit OT but I use soap-free and sulphate-free products. Never buy the toothpastes with Triclosan in the ingredients.

Also, on the topic of showering - would anyone building or renovating ever skip installing a mains pressure system in favour of low pressure for water conservation reasons? I highly doubt it as I think cost would be the main fact but happy to hear any thought about this. Didn't the Labour Govt run into problems years ago when it proposed limits on showerheads?

Overall it appears to me we are all happy with the current rate of water usage, even if it maybe a little excessive at times. It will take a far more momentous event to ever get us to seriously reign in our usage I think.

Given the general lack of water storage reservoirs I have observed in NZ overall, this does not really surprise me greatly.

Dams about 80% and the rest is from springs/ground water

The onehunga spring supplies about 2/3rds that of what the waikato river supplies.

We were told when the Waikato pipeline was installed that Auckland would never have a water shortage again. Guess they lied again. Get ready folks for a price hike.

Don’t need running water for brushing teeth sure. Shower though, especially in the colder months, its preferred to keep it running to hold on to the temperature. In a proper bathroom you have ventilation running, standing in a draft for any period of time is a bit uncomfortable.

im usually the same, its not hard to do, all your in there to do is wash your body

There is a sewerage spill in it at the moment anyway so not sure that we would want water from there.

I guess this forum has a very high male to female ratio... Most of us have a fairly short shower time I guess. There is no way we can find out the real shower time if we run a poll here.

Good Observation, and luckily Granny Herald has more advice for conservation that has me curious:

• Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth or shaving.

• Try to shower for four minutes or less.

• When hand-washing dishes, fill the sink rather than washing the dishes under a running tap.

Seriously - who does this? I was taught to fill the sink with hot water, shave, swish, shave swish, empty when finished. Why would you run the tap continuously for the time you shave?

Similarly with dishes - hot soapy water in the sink. Maybe rinse off the suds if you believe they are carcinogenic. But if you washed them under a running tap, the detergent would go right down the sink so you'd have to keep refreshing it. I dunno maybe I'm overthinking this.

I rinse under a running tap.

Rinse off bits, down the drain, plate etc into dishwasher.

I'm on tank water, so if I use too much, it hits me directly in the wallet. Luckily in the 20 years I've owned a house with tank water, I've only ever had to buy it once (and that was because of a leak).

We do have short showers, less than 5 minutes. Front load washing machine (by far the BIGGEST saver of water we have bought), half load dishwasher and both my wife and I have lived off tank water for most of our lives (I have lived off it for 44 years, so the habits are there).
