Ok folks. No naming the person or company here until investigation is complete.

Stuff have an article naming the company already. I will abide by what you have said. It would be unfair to assume poor workmanship. Could be a defect within the gas heater for all anyone knows at this stage.

There was a post removed which included a comment implying that the tradesperson named was at fault, and was derogatory about the trade.

There is a LOT against stuff online for that story, and rightfully so.

I mean c'mon. It's bad enough he will have had no sleep thinking 'was it me?' the last few days before fronting up. But then for the reporters to actively track him down. To his HOME. And knock on the door for a statement which funny enough 'refused to give a statement' And then plaster the vans details everywhere. So not on.

Completely agree that is reporting at gutter level.

Police/Fire investigation

AKA nothing being said in the chance of incriminating any potential legal proceedings

Official information dribble as media releases. Errything else sleuth reporting gone wrong

A quantity of gas met an ignition source.

I suppose you left out the oxidant by accident?

In all seriousness a proper investigation could take months to complete. It's a very serious case so they'll want to be sure they've covered everything.

I wonder if the tiled roof was a saving grace with the usual air gaps. I can imagine the internal pressure higher with a fixed iron roof.

Good point. Ours just lift off. That could allow a big WOOSH instead of a BANG, as the first tiles peel away and avoid the pressure building up as much. Lifesavers more than likely.

Not convinced anything helped nor hindered the effect of the sonic wave / shock wave. I'm some 5 km away as the crow flies and it shook our wide expanse roof like something it landed on it

That may have been mixed with ground vibration.

But I am surprised their inners aren't liquid

MythBusters and slowmoguys have good footage from their kabooms how much dust is kicked up hundreds of metres away

I assume the damage will make it hard to say "this" caused it. Better to take the time, but for those in the area, I hope they are kept informed. Imagine if this happened and we all use reticulated gas? The worry.

I can see many getting gas checks and many going for bottles than pipes.

As I understand it Christchurch has many in roof water cylinder installations. Does that apply to gas?
