Chrisclarke:We get the vet out periodically to do our horse's teeth. He has to come to us, bring a trailer mounted crush to contain the horse, put the head in a sling, sedate the horse (sometimes two or three times during the procedure). Usually cleans the sheath at the same time (if you don't know don't ask...). Takes a good hour and only costs about $300.
I've just spent an hour at the dentist's. 5 min check by dentist followed by hygienist. ~$240.
I wonder if a vet dealing in horses has more no nonsense customers and charges accordingly? The poor old horses know that when the crunch comes they're likely to be fed to some spoilt cats or dogs.
