Chrisclarke:

We get the vet out periodically to do our horse's teeth. He has to come to us, bring a trailer mounted crush to contain the horse, put the head in a sling, sedate the horse (sometimes two or three times during the procedure). Usually cleans the sheath at the same time (if you don't know don't ask...). Takes a good hour and only costs about $300.

I've just spent an hour at the dentist's. 5 min check by dentist followed by hygienist. ~$240.

I wonder if a vet dealing in horses has more no nonsense customers and charges accordingly? The poor old horses know that when the crunch comes they're likely to be fed to some spoilt cats or dogs.

There were no extractions. Just a scale and polish. Same day visit. In at 9am had him back at 2pm.  @Sleemanj thanks for posting your estimate.  My cat needed bloods which I see yours didn’t. So that kinda works out similar  then I would imagine.

thanks for the replies. Much appreciated.

Try getting the same stuff done under general for a human at the dentist, you wouldn't get a lot of change from $2K. I think I'll take my teeth to the vet next time!

When did cleaning cat teeth, or dog teeth for that matter become a "thing". We had two or three cats over the years while we were growing up. Can't say I can remember them going to the vet at all, ever, let alone to have their teeth cleaned.

I won't repeat on here my one liner when someone comments on the cost of taking their pet to the vet. 😇

Well people like me take pets in for checks up, vaccinations etc.  Kind of like to care of the critters living with me ... neglecting them doesn't even get thought about.

Same reason we had ours cleaned.

We must have been lucky and got the low maintenance models.

Our cats certainly weren't neglected.

Lucky you, in the last, 18 months over 4 to 5 cats...

   Urinary Obstruction

Unexplained appetite loss resulting in many diagnostic visits and 2 different practices

   Ultrasounds x2 (different cats)

Blood tests, many many blood tests

Kidney disease x2, 1 resulting in euthanisation

   Hyperthyroid x1

Bad cystitis (short opiod course and then antibiotics when it was still persisting)

Bad skin infection (month long antibiotic course)

   Leg injury requiring pain killers

   Leg injury requiring stitch-up

Various bouts of other general malaise

Currently have 1 cat on thyroid meds (neomercazole), 1 on appetite stimulant (mirtazapine), 2 on anti inflammatories (metacam), 1 on renal diet food.

Old cats get expensive quick if you want to keep them in good health.

Reminds me I need to get my dog back to the vet to see if he has lost enough weight to get his teeth cleaned (and extracted) - last time we got the annual vaccinations, I was advised he had rotten teeth but needed to get down to 4kg (was 5.1)

Can vary on vet too. In Auckland, Glen Eden vets advertise a special now and then for cats. $350 all up, clean and nay extractions that may be needed.
