stocksp: You don’t want to regularly dry clean ( at least for a wool suit). I have to wear a suit every day and rotate so I don’t wear the same one twice in a week. I never dry clean suits unless something is spilt on them

I have four pairs of wool suits, one wool jacket and a cotton/linen jacket... Rotating these practically every day - as well as shoes. You want shoes to have at least a couple of days between use and definitely not wear leather soles if there's rain in the forecast.

Damn that’s some dedication with that kind of rotation. I don’t believe in needing to wear suits in this day and age (in IT) so I try to spend as little as possible.

Yeah - I don’t work in IT and would prefer not to wear suits every day - but it’s the uniform. I cycle to work so have about 5 suits at work and about 4 at home for when I travel. I’m not as good at shoe rotation as freitasm :)

I do not envy you guys who have to wear suits.. Are your employers stuck in 1960?

I wear suits as an option. I think they look good and you don't have to look scruffy in some settings. Always easier to dress down than to dress up.

Oh I totally get some people may choose to wear suits (although I wouldn't do it daily for work), but more that some people are _required_ to do so is very old fashioned IMHO.

Yep, especially in the IT industry where dressing down gives one an aura of trustworthiness and connection with the rest of humankind:

People in IT _want_ to be connected to the rest of humankind? Most of us think our systems would run oh so much better without all you users :-P

I haven't worn suits in decades, when I did I used to buy them from Vance Vivians.

I think Vance's got really good stuff. Just over my budget.

freitasm: Won't kill you. You know their suits aren't pure wool or linen, right? They get really hot in summer because of synthetic fibres.

I thnk they stock Merino Wool now - do agree that wool is a goo way to go :)

I have to wear a special type of suit at work. It is a bright orange with reflective stripes, often called a boiler suit.

The last suit came from Crane Brothers, 6yrs ago, it really gets worn these days. Best advice I was ever given (Country Manager for a large IT vendor) was wear what is appropriate for the people you are seeing today. Thats been gumboots and a Swandry at field days to suit and tie for a Shortland St law firm the next day. If I'm in the office for the day its jeans and cotton shirts.

Interesting thread. Thanks for the info. I am curious to see why no one has mentioned 3 Wise Men? They seem to have reasonable quality suits and I went in on the weekend and the saleswoman was very helpful. Haven't made the call yet but pretty close to it. Merino suit with 2 shirts for $800 seems a decent deal. Anyone have any experience with the quality etc of their products?
