You can filter to New Zealand as a location now which I think they added because I used to just search north island when looking to buy so it would have missed all the south island sellers.

I was looking for an item last night and didn't want to muck around with non-nz sellers so had the filter set for NZ. I came across several "located" in Auckland, but with a note in their listing saying I'd need to wait at least two weeks for shipping as the items were coming from overseas.

Frustrating, and definitely defeats the purpose of the NZ filter.

Oath, a few years back new accounts kept buy now'ing a car I was selling the directly messaging me the same low-ball offer.

I gave up on TradeMe fairly quickly.

umm you could list as classified! would you list with a buy now if you were trying to sell your house on trademe?

I do wonder about the overseas sellers and their tax obligations.

There is someone selling commercial coffee machines out of Australia, they have a price listed and shipping fees all listed etc which is fine, but only at the very bottom of the listing under the shipping charges does it even mention the possibility of import charges. This is misleading at best, if not downright deceptive, particularly when there are NZ sellers whose prices appear higher before someone manually adds in what the fees may be.

If international sellers are to be allowed on the platform, thats all well and good, but their pricing should reflect the full costs to the buyer, not "+ import charges"

Im interested in your opinion of Facebook buy and sell. Ive been selling on TradeMe since they started (the good old days).

Wife tells me facebook is pretty good but Ive generally viewed it as a distraction.

Any comments re FACEBOOK BUY & SELL?

I'd say that if you're dealing with local people, where you can say to them that you'll pop over and view the item and pay them then, then you're ok. Otherwise I'd stay away from Facebook for buying/selling.

I've used Facebook quite successfully in last year or so. It is a bit like the wild west, no real rules. Apart from the occasional low ball offer and people not responding to messages, its pretty good. Zero fees, you don't have wait for an auction to end, you can negotiate (low ball or sensible offers) so long as your careful and inspect the good before handing over the cash its good, i like it.

I do wonder how much stuff on there is stolen, although trade me probably faces the same problem in this regard.

Would definatley never put money in someones account and hope they posted me the goods. You don't get the same level of trust or protection you get with Trademe. But hey eyes wide open.

I listed a car on facebook, had it sold within 24hrs at a price i was happy with. Brought a pair of ski boots on trade me $60 as the highest bidder, soon realized they didn't fit properly listed them on Facebook and sold them a week later for $150.

I'm sure facebook will develop into a money making machine one day like ebay, trademe, amazon.

To be honest, TradeMe's original intention has been replaced by Facebook. Why would you list on TradeMe where you have to pay a percentage, when you can list on Facebook and pay with your data instead? Almost everyone has already made a Facebook account anyway.

I don't do much in those realms myself, but my family's order of operations seems to be Facebook before TradeMe.

I've never heard of anyone buying anything off Facebook (although I do see listings for sale). Trademe, yes, but Facebook? No. What is Facebook's market share percentage for sales, as opposed to Trademe?

I've sold quite a few items thru Facebook. No fees is good. Plenty of useless tyre kickers however.

I am mainly a cash Facebook buyer. But for specially Irene form closed groups I'll buy from the photos only. However we are taking about maybe $100 for a board game at the most.

Tend not to buy from trade me unless I need it now. Why drop ship when you have Ali Express?

Facebook - all your FB friends and everyone else can see what you're selling (unless you use a fake account).

A friend is moving overseas and listing everything not nailed down. Saw she put a used toilet brush for sale on FB for $5. Amazed when it was later marked as sold.

I have bought quite a few small things locally on TM - My only experience selling was 2 kids motorbikes. Based them off TM prices to give some wiggle room. Sold on FB via NZ Farming page (was on marketplace as well) in 3 days. Other than an offer to swap one of the bikes (value about $1600) for a $16k BMW all dealings were sweet via messenger and a phone call.

Money paid up front, bikes picked up and no fees.

Im guessing 2 listings with sale price at about $1500 each would have resulted in fees about $400??

More than happy to use FB for Buy/Sell within closed national groups, open marketplace is a bit dodgy

Yes. My wife bought a couple of small items via Facebook. Nothing arrived for a month. Checked on the track and track link to find it was dead. Quick search of FB confirmed that it was a scam. Lucky it was only $26 out of pocket. Never again.

If the trader delivers what is paid within the nominated shipping period then I'm unlikely to care if it comes from China.

I'm not so concerned where items come from as I carefully evaluate any listing before bidding. That is the easiest way to ensure that there are no problems because any online sale is very much "buyer beware". There have always been traders with misleading listings e.g. shipping from Australia while pretending to be in NZ.

The costs of slow delivery are generally just a lot of aggravation. A much bigger concern is the increase in Trade Me fees that affect all casual traders. For example, success fees for general listings by casual traders have increased exorbitantly which is why I barely list anything on Trade Me since 2012. Then, because I'm not listing, I'm not looking so I don't buy much at all.

https://www.trademe.co.nz/Help/FeeCalculator.aspx says $237 each which is $478 total.

Here's the maximum success fee increases:

2003 $99
2012 $149
2017 $249

The % rates for success fees has also increased dramatically. I'm pretty sure that I used to pay 4.5% or 5.5% way back in 2004 but I couldn't confirm this.

2006 ???
2012 7.9% to $200; 4.9% to $1,500; 1.9% above $1,500
2016 7.9%

This means that the overall success fee selling a $2,000 item has nearly doubled in a decade:
