It comes down to advertising, and getting clicks. As RNZ is state funded, they don't need to worry about this, so they are actually reporting the proper news, not just what is popular.

Unfortunately, even the RNZ coverage of this has been excessive in my opinion. This case has received much more publicity than it needed to.

Seems to be it's NZ media going OTT rather than UK in this case though, checking a few of the major media websites, BBC, Guardian, Telegraph have nothing about this trial on their front-page.

Speaking to a friend in the UK (who, incidentally, lives in the same street as Grace's parents) says the coverage is quite light over there and I've pointed her at the RNZ website.

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

I saw something in Stuff which said that if they report it, they are obliged to report it accurately and verbatim. If true, that would explain the salacious detail.

I haven't seen the TV news in about 2 years now so can't comment on that specifically.

I believe it is an offence to publicly discuss ongoing criminal trials.

Up to you people though. Do you feel lucky?

[edit] just checked, some discussion is allowed by the courts, freedom of expression etc.... several of the above comments do refer more specifically to the case, probably ok, but INAL.

I do have strong opinions about this particular trial , safer to wait until after to discuss.

Bollocks. Court cases in NZ are public unless ordered otherwise. Having an opinion and discussing it is not a crime. We aren't China quite yet.

If only there was a control we all had available to us to avoid listening to information we don't wish to hear...?

Media are sensationalist click bait. True journalism is dead IMO.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

It's there to attract viewers to watch their customers ad's. Entertaining and divisive content with speculation and things bordering on hyperbole will drive engagement. No different to clickbait youtube thumbnails etc. Stop falling for it and providing them views if you want it to change.

Otherwise you are no better than someone that keeps doing things that hurt themselves and then complain about it.

I usually catch one and sometimes two RNZ news bulletins per day and I actually haven't noticed it in those at all.

I rarely watch FTA TV news. This sounds really bad. Curious to see this if anyone has a link to the story.

it was just as the story was being reported for the courts. It was just a feeling my wife and I got from listening to it. I’m sure it’s still on the one news site.
