mattwnz:

I am not sure if anyone here creates videos on Youtube, but there have been big changes on that with respect to websites tracking children under 13 for targeted advertising, as there is a US law called COPPA which apparently prevents websites doing this without parents permission. I am not sure if NZ has such laws in regards to websites tracking and tailoring ads to a particular user. But in the US, it could mean that a lot of youtube channels that create kids content could shut down as a result of this, as non targeted ads are not worth anywhere near as much as targeted adverts. . These laws don't seem to be able to keep up with technology.

Isn't COPPA meant to protect children? Surely that's worth more than some Youtubers profitting from targetting ads at children?

I just received this from them in reply to my complaint about it:

Thanks for getting in touch with us regarding our Privacy Policy Update, I'm sorry to hear of your disappointment here.

When we changed our policy in 2018 we were very clear about how Trade Me members could opt out of their data being shared but we weren’t clear on if that would apply to targeted emails about Trade Me or its services. This change is about clearing up that confusion.

While you're not able to opt-out of seeing customised ads about Trade Me services when you're on one of our sites, you can unsubscribe from our promotional emails via your email preferences page.

The opt out page is here where you can set your preferences.

Kind regards,

Liam

The Privacy Commissioner is to conduct an inquiry into Trade Me's recent update to its privacy policy.

The update that came into effect earlier this month, outlined that Trade Me may use some personal information of members in its marketing.

It covered members who had elected to opt out from their personal information being used for marketing or advertising purposes.

Commissioner John Edwards said it contained some ambiguities and he wanted to make sure it had been handled responsibly and transparently.

He also wanted to find out what the affected users thought of the changes.
