Chch, its supposed to be 34, its fully overcast but you can't see any cloud definition. Its eerily bright, and like I'm wearing a slight yellow camera filter. Norwest and warm, currently 30, but you get wind with a nor west, its quite calm. I guess the smoke and heat has allowed the temps to diffuse and equalise across the plains

Worst I have seen it, can’t even see the island or the Two Thumb Range. The light is so weird it feels like a winters day.

It's hazy in Whakatane too. Not as bad as the Tekapo cam though!

I can't smell anything on the other side of the hill in Whitby but it's certainly an impressive,eerie sight.

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

Maybe not. Catastrophic fires on the present scale are a consequence of European settler practices, mainly the putting out of fires, and possibly by displacing the original people who managed things by setting fires. It's all going to burn sooner or later; sooner and often on a small scale, or later on a large scale.

Woke today in Dunedin and it was VERY dark. I could instantly smell and knew without the news that it had to be Australian fire-related (Acrid Wood Burn smell). It was REALLY dark. I really feel for Australians facing this at close proximity. It felt all very eerie.

With the air temp cooling the dust has obviously lowered in Canterbury.

Since about 5 the sun disappeared. As did the hills/distant visibility

And it has smelt since.
Smoke is even included in the weather reports for overnight.

I am reasonably sure it's unrelated to the fires in Australia but there was a MIGHTY fog mid to late PM today in Dunedin, we are in an elevated location and the fog was sitting at foliage levels of the trees. Strangely it's mostly cleared a few hours later. It's novel to still see the sun/light at 9+ pm :)

The Smell of smoke is still tangible.
