I met the same (presumably) NH90 on Sunday early afternoon when I was out for a run up to Tunnel Gully and back.  They spent time over the Remutaka incline, then low hovering over the Tunnel Gully area, then popped over the hill to Maymorn, winched someone down (and possibly retrieved them) and after a bit, headed back to Trentham to refuel and were back out about half an hour later.

I was starting to wonder if they were using me (wearing bright orange running top) for ground target tracking practice.  :-p

They'd also been flying around from Trentham on Thursday.

I used to work on a farm not far from a USAF base in the UK where A10's were based. Sometimes I'd be ploughing or whatever and all of a sudden a couple of them would appear, lined up with suspicious accuracy on the tractor! I imagine 6000 rounds a minute of depleted uranium rounds versus John Deere would have been a predictably one-sided outcome.....

One of my great regrets in life is that I will never get to fire one of those guns!

The JD would have kept on going?  They are basically unkillable aren't they?  :-p

The Police are trialling  helicopter prescience in Christchurch, see the bottom section of this page: https://www.police.govt.nz/about-us/structure/police-teams-and-units/air-support-eagle-uniT

they need to ‘trial’ to give the illusion of evaluating options, but believe me, there will be a permanent deployment in Christchurch arising from the ‘trial’.

The next stage of the PR campaign has started, John Price, District Commander for Canterbury, has confirmed his staff ‘absolutely love it’, and ‘what price can you put on saving a life?’, and that he would like to see the helicopter permanently stationed in Christchurch.

In the days of the Skyhawks the airspace over the Northern Wairarapa was regularly used by the RNZAF for dog fighting practice presumably because there was little other air traffic.   As for the helicopters the police would use RNZAF helicopters for cannabis search and destroy operations.   They would use a country sports field/domain/school etc for re-fueling.

empacher48: You will find that Police 3 does have a transponder and ABS-B, however any private owner has the ability to tell Flightradar24 or Flightaware that their information is not allowed to be broad cast. Can’t fly in controlled airspace without one, no exceptions.

You’ll find it with a lot of private jets, some military aircraft, rescue helicopters and police helicopters are all having their data removed from those services. Flightradar24 although an entertaining tool, there is a lot that can be left off it.

Sure does. Mums the word. But yes requests have gone out to most known ones.

Something I did notice is soon after the first couple of weeks sticking to the <1500ft uncontrolled ceiling raised up to <2300ft. Presumably due noise and special request allowance
