Can anyone explain to me what a network is?

I have written to a company called Google who apparently answer questions, as follows:

Dear Mr Google

Re: Question to do with a 'network' or 'home network'

I have been invited by a colleague to participate in an eclectic competition in which I must describe something known as a 'network' or 'home network'. I am required to create a paen of sagacious, scintillating nature which propagates a tintinnabulation of joy in the worthy gentlemen and ladies who are, by virtue of their unfeigned and voluminous exactitude, placed in the position of judge and jury in the matter before them.

A friend, whose opinion I find to be of such reliability as to be beyond disapprobation viz. the outcome of his conversational benefaction, offered an apothegm suggesting that I, your correspondent, should contact you in order to obtain further divulgences that would better acquaint me with the concept of a 'network', vis a vis the competition referred to above.

Thus it is that I find myself sat here at my desk, Cratchett-like, quill in hand and hoping that my meagre correspondence will elicit mental effulgence leading to erudition in respect of the aforementioned 'network' conundrum. I look forward to hearing from you - most ideally instant if possible but early proximo would suffice for my purpose - with further enlightenment.

Your ability to answer questions is, I find upon conversing with those I have met on assorted and diverse peregrinations, both prodigious and punctilious. I trust you will find my missive propitious.

I remain, Sir, your obedient servant

etc.

-

I have a small office at a friends house. The UDM would certainly help consolidate the setup nicely. Also note my patent pending advanced reset tool, handy when you need to reset a device.

Does it have a master filter?

Your advance reset tool looks suspiciously like my advanced sim card removal tool.

Nice initiative @michaelmurfy.

I can't compete with @eracode and @BigMal's setup. So I won't even try. hahaha

I'd finally be able to get rid of my crappy ISP router and improve the network security at the same time, and give me a start in moving to a unified system for my networking.

There is far to much IoT stuff from different companies floating around in the cesspool that is this network and it needs a big fat security pill to sit in front of it all!

I have a Ubiquitii system at home, but the WiFi system is too old and too slow (like its builder) :

Old single-story villa, 2degrees gigabit UFB:

Chorus ONT (Gen 3) >  EdgeRouter 4 > TOUGHSwitch PoE switch > 3 x Unifi AP long range WAPs

  • Wireless performance is limited to 2.4GHz.  😕

  • I also have multiple PCs and NAS units connected to the ER-4 via a Cisco smart switch - the ethernet LAN works well at gigabit speeds.  😊

I tried that network solution.

In order to try and get fibre I fed the dogs Metamucil. Did not have any effect, well - not on the speed of the network anyway!

I then tried a triple redundancy solution using

  1. Shorthaired Pointer, German - version 1.0
  2. Spaniel, English Springer - version 2.0 (Beta)
  3. Fox Terrier, English - version 2.5

I found that the network administrator was over-burdened with network management tasks and at least one element that resented being a Thin Client and required larger servers.

Lol next time try a lab, pitbull or GSD. Despite what I said they run well, are reliable and speedy but they do all cost a fair bit to purchase and maintain. Gotta watch the stack overflow too, the bit bucket fills fast and is pretty messy even doing regular clean up.

Will add pic but my network consists of....a mess.

Garage contains ONT, Zyxel router, 2x DLink NAS, 1x Phone, 1x Server, 1 Brother printer

One network cable fires up through the ceiling to the lounge where an 8 port Dlink switch currently feeds an Xbox and Unifi AP - the 8 port should be in the garage, but had to swipe it because I have misplaced my spare 5 port I had....

Another network cable goes across top of garage door into a cupboard which feeds into the master bedroom for media PC.

A third cable goes through the wall, outside under the deck, around the side of the house, under the house, until it pops up in my office into a 5 port switch.

That switch feeds - desktop, PS3, Unifi AP#2, Cisco VoiP phone.......

Then theres multiple wifi devices inc laptops, tablets and phones.

Flaws : See above. Mess. Most hardware is 10th hand/pulled from rubbish bins. CAT5E cable is probably the cheapest I could get that would actually run at gigabit. Holes drilled in walls/floors with cables poked through. The router dosent log anything, and drops the SIP connection at least 2x a week along with random reboots. The eldest gets aggro when her Overwatch pings go nuts due to congestion on the wifi. I go nuts when everyone starts yelling "internet is down" due to the router doing its reboots.

Nothing is done properly because I keep pulling crap out to replace with "new" old gear.

Be nice to have something decent and new so I can take a break from repairing the stuff thats in place.

I'd love a router that works.

How I remain a geek, I don't know. How anything around here works, I don't know.

I work as a remote engineer - how anything works locally, is beyond me.

Woah @JayADee - that was damn creative.

After somebody else went through and hit "not answer" on everything I've gone ahead and marked answers again. This is just for easy tracking of entries.

Easy voting: If you make an entry mark it with "set answer" - this way by viewing Answers Only you only get the people who have entered the competition.

Anyway - Not long now until we're back at Level 2 so keep the entries coming in + remember to +1 your favorites!

Thank you michaelmurfy. I lost my last two very unexpectedly and suddenly a week apart not long ago and it still chokes me up. They're like kids. I love my new fur baby who turns 11 months tomorrow. The little monster keeps me on my toes. Right now he is demanding his afternoon walk!

pS we really could use better wifi. The husband is teaching high school seniors online and I am providing IT support at a primary school from home.

@JayAdee  I have one of those "4paw" network devices too - packets keep going missing or being dropped though. And keeps going into sleep mode.

Ahhh, adorable! They're super trainable, especially with only the one to concentrate one. Mine knows a load of tricks all on hand signals and he does a mean room search to find his hidden toy with peanut butter in it.
