Rikkitic:

Can raw meat be safely frozen? Even for cats?

I have an entire freezer full of venison and beef that would say yes, it's perfectly fine.  6 months plus, no issue.

If people can get corned beef in tins, why can't cats?

Because they don't have pockets in which to keep their wallets.

I think it is fair to assume that unless they say they get it from a fresh above board process / source then, most likely sourced from meat works 2nds by products... i.e the stuff that gets rejected.

Talking hills. Read the recalls listed. Makes you re think what brand you are using.

Thanks for that. Although I give my cats meat, I am along-time vegetarian and don't know much about this kind of thing. Can fresh meat just be chucked in the freezer, or does it require any special preparation?

Just make sure it is sealed in some way, shape or form - anything placed in the freezer that isn't covered will end up freezer burnt. Otherwise, freeze in the portion size you expect to use, and de-frost in the fridge.

Divide the meat up into portions the size you want - two or three days worth - put into suitably-sized ziplock plastic bags, label with a marker pen, chuck ‘em in the freezer.

Does real meat for cats exist in tins? Not the cereal stuff or jellimeat or other processed rubbish, just straight meat. If so, what brand would that be? My cats are fussy eaters but we live a long way from shops. Some tinned backup would be useful.

Sorry, position already filled. I'll put you on the reserve list in case one of them gets done in by rotten meat.

We’ve had a lot of cats over the years - but not for the last eight or so years. We used to feed them Jimbo’s - real meat. Went down well. We would balance it - one meal a day meat, other meal each day dry food.

https://jimbos.co.nz

Jimbos is good stuff and keeps awhile in the fridge, if you do one shop a week you've got a week's worth of food in one container if you keep it as a once-a-day meal with dry food the rest of the time as you say, that's what we do too.

Another tip is to feed them garbage when they're kittens (Whiskas, Purina, whatever) to get them used to it and then they'll eat anything as adults. If you start them on Fancy Feast or whatever that'll set a minimum bar below which they won't go.

Speaking of which, Jimbo's Kangaroo meat is Her Majesty's favourite. Its also fun sending friends overseas photos of the cat wolfing down chunks of Skippy.

I used to use Jimbo's some years back, but no longer buy it. It did have a long shelf date, plus unusual texture and smell at times, which got me wondering about how many preservatives etc were pumped into it.

Bad idea. My kitten had special needs and it got Blackhawk on vet's recommendation. By the time is discovered Whiskas and refused to touch any more Blackhawk, it was already completely healthy and nearly a year old, so I figured 'what the hell'.

Cats and dogs will quite happily eat their own vomit, so I'm not overly fussed about the food not being 100% pure rump steak or whatever.
