The renewal in dec 2019 was punishing.  Went to PO, photo taken......Weeks later no photo present. Went back to PO, small office and everyone knows everyone, new photo exact to old "new photo".

Second "new" photo went through no issues.

Followed up with Realme staff, both photos were fine.......conclusion, NFI, but it's done and life goes on.

Did the online renewal since mine expired a couple of years ago. Grab phone, login, take a photo, take a couple of videos, three days later email says all renewed. As government services go, pretty painless.

The sooner they ditch this lame attempt of a service the better.

Yep, I've managed to renew it online - you just have to record yourself nodding and shaking your head. I was amazed at how easy it was.

Same here, all done in few minutes. Got the approval email on the third day.

How can your identity expire?

You are still who you were....

Do you renew your passport every 10 years? People get older, they get hurt, the get a face lift.

You do change your password regularly? Verification of identity needs to be kept up to date.

Yes because I have no choice if I want a passport. However, my identity remains the same. I am me. The notion that I might no longer be me is odd to say the least. Your documents may arbitrarily expire - your identity does not.

The USA used to accept your Visa if it was in an old passport as long as you had a current one.

Why? As identity services go, it's one of the better ones. If you want to see a "lame attempt of a service", have a look at MyGov. Or is it MyGovID? Totally unrelated services with near identical names, and a vastly inferior implementation. RealMe is relatively simple to use, provides sufficiently high assurance of an identity assertion, and unlike some services I'm yet to hear of a breach in it yet.

As more and more government and business to consumer services move online, this sort of identity platform becomes necessary.

And if I hear the word "blockchain" in response, there will be fire raining from the skies.

You're missing the point that was in fact even given to you in black and white. Your identity does not expire - the verification (or, to put it more specifically the trust in the assertion that the identity information is still utilised by the entity it identifies) does.

Success!

Called up the 0800 help number and got a very patient chap who identified the problem: the mobile number associated with my account wasn't verified. Went through security questions, got mobile number verified, and then clicking the Get Verified button worked (didn't get the error message about the account being locked).

Impressed the help line worked on a Saturday.
