yeah i always wonder how they clear the bins when they're behind cars
i see their point but then as a resident, where the heck are you going to put the bin!
As from the 1st July 2021 Tauranga council takes back control of kerb side rubbish collection from 3 sub contractors.
https://www.tauranga.govt.nz/living/rubbish-and-recycling/kerbside-collections-2021
So each household will have a minimum of 4 bins @ $210/yr plus 1 garden bin, if requested @ $60/yr extra per 4-weekly or @ $95 fortnightly collection)
240L recycling bin [collected alternate fortnightly to rubbish] (first year then can order to swap out to smaller 140L following year)
140L rubbish bin [collected alternate fortnightly to recycling] (first year then can order to swap out to larger 240L following year)
45L glass bin [collected alternate fortnightly to rubbish]
23L food scraps bin [collected every week]
240L garden waste bin [collected 4-weekly or fortnightly]
Well the good old holiday home bach/mansion owners are not happy.
As to kerb side bin access that is going to be very interesting. My own street is a dead end. Everyone has driveways and garages BUT on weekdays both sides get quite full with commercial resident workers and the local school employees from the main road. The present bin & bag collectors x 3 do leave their cabs. The new kerb side contractors are EnviroWaste and we must have our bins out by 0700 on our allocated day so we shall see how it all goes.
Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.
@FineWine That Tauranga stuff is interesting in the context of this thread - but note that in this case WM are not a sub-contractor to Auckland Council. They are an independent operator dealing with customers, not working for and on behalf of the council. They are a competitor with the council's sub-contractors.
If what I have been told about H&S etc is correct, when our contract with WM expires in two months, we'll let it lapse and go with the council arrangement.
Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.
Yes, sorry, you are correct. I get carried away sometimes with my own hyperbole and wander off point (waffling)

Not at all. 😀 It is interesting.

How are they going to run their business if a good number of bins are going to be obstructed by vehicles? Guessing they will provide you with a refund for this week.
My bin company drive leaves the cab, but why don't they have another staff in the passenger side, so they aren't opening the door onto the road?
I have also seen some trucks with long arms that can stretch over obstructions.
But don't most people put the bin right on the edge of the driveway curb, and cars aren't supposed to park that close to a drive curb. Never personally had a problem with cars obstructing the bin.
Solution:
Place wheelie bin in middle of road on rubbish day! 🙃
Since we're on the topic of rubbish collection, in Palmy it's nuts on rubbish day. There are 3-4 rubbish collection companies, all with their own trucks which come around and empty their own wheelie bins.
For me who's located down a cul-de-sac, it's painful watching all these trucks try and negotiate the end of the street without hitting curbs or cars.
Surely having one collection source would make life easier for everyone involved?! One truck doing one road instead of multiple, but hey, what do I know.
Often I think that when corporations cite Health and Safety concerns they're not actually genuinely concerned with anybody's health or safety. It's just avoidance of ending up liable for something so they formulate stupid policies to overcompensate for scenarios that have very little likelihood of ever happening.
xpd:
Guess residents need to start coning off the area on pick up days...
LOL. That reminds me that we have some cones we purchased some time ago, and they are currently warning passersby of obstructions. One is a treeroot stump that is a trip hazard that the council needs to remove as it is on their berm. They cut down the dead tree but left the stump for people to trip over. Only been waiting 6 months for them to do anything.
With central govt now telling councils they don't need to (prefer they didn't) require off street parking for residential properties it will only get worse

Spot on. It’s already bad enough - with cars parked both sides along the length of narrow city roads.

I suspect it will only get worse with more and more urban intensification. Sort of reminds me of New York where on certain days their pedestrian pavements on the street get piled full of garbage and smells, as the city didn't incorporate service areas like alleyways. I hope our councils are planning for this....
At least with rubbish bags, the collector just gets out and fling's them onto the truck. Maybe we need to go back to these. Many councils seem to use bags still, you just buy them at the supermarket, but people seem to prefer wheelie type bins.
