Be warned that, depending on the age, type, and condition of the cable, there's a good chance the whole thing will need to be replaced anyway.

I'd be inclined to leave the cable and trench in a new one. It's already been disconnected at the street so there is no risk.
Most of the expense is the trenching.

It is always much cheaper if they can just pull things with a mole - that cut our costs for a new water pipe from $20,000 to $5000.  So can power cables be moled?

Thanks everyone, but my son has just told me cable finders have located it but he awaits an electrician to see if it is repairable. Fingers crossed.
